Does it end?

When I first bought a gun, it was a 340PD, and I figured if I bought enough ammo, I'd be prepared for my SHTF defense (at the time the worry was hurricanes).

Then I bought a Kahr PM9 just to have so in case one or the other broke, I'd still be armed.

Then I got my CWP. (Actually I had applied for it when I had the 340PD, but it came in the mail literally the day after I bought the PM9)

Then I bought a Keltec P3AT so I could carry any time I wanted in my pocket.

Then I got fed up with some of the problems with all 3 guns (bullets jumping crimp with the 340PD, jams with the PM9, and an ongoing extractor issue with the P3AT) and sold them all and bought a Glock 22, 23, and 27.

Then I started thinking that I should stock up mags before any legislation gets passed making hi-caps illegal..... I bought a lot.

Then I decided, if the going got tough, my 22 would be the go-to, so I should have a back-up..... bought a second.... then I bought more mags for it too (I have 20 Glock 22 mags, 10 Glock 23 mags, and 12 Glock 27 mags now).

Now I carry the 27 daily and figure, I like it so much I'd like a second.... so I'm ordering another one.

Plus I want some long guns for the real SHTF plan (the SHTF plan got more complicated  ) ... so two Colt 6920's are on the way...... prolly will never use them for a real SHTF scenario (which would be great if I don't), but I want them anyways.

I've also decided I should probably have some hunting guns to go hunting once in a while.

Somewhere in the mix I bought a Ruger 10/22. I just ordered a Savage Arms Mark-II FV, and am looking at soon getting something chambered in .308 for general-hunting.... and probably a shotgun for duck hunting. Oh and I bought a Walther P22 for fun and am hoping to get a Ruger .22 fun gun soon too)

I've also stocked up on ammo just in case prices go up soon.

Now I'm starting to wonder..... I'm seeing a very distinct pattern here. Does it end? Or am I just going to literally end up being the man who lives in his collection one day?

No, because after you have every gun you want you will see either something new or something you have not seen before and then want it.

It never stops. Assuming you do find all the guns you want than you have to accessorize them with mags and barrels and stocks and scopes and lasers and lights and whatever you really (think you) need.

and the silliest thing is that this so-called SHTF situation is so unlikely to ever come up that I feel ridiculous with each element that gets added.

Titan - yeah, that's what I'm starting to realize.

When I started, there was a light at the end of a short tunnel..... ever since then the tunnel gets longer.... and I'm guessing one day it's just going to be infinitely long and I won't be satisfied until I own one of everything including guns that haven't even been invented yet!

I've even gotten a fascination with antiques lately and am thinking I could totally get into antique revolvers.... but where would I store them.... and how am I going to explain to women when they come over, "Oh.... yeah..... just ignore the safes and ammo-boxes everywhere."

You need spair parts...
:what:

(I plan on building a 'gun room' when I build my house.
-It'll be bigger than the master bedroom!)

If you are really just preparing for a catastrophe like a Hurricane you can probably stop now.

But me telling you that won't do you any good......

Don't forget once you have all the guns you need, ( cause that will ever happen) you have to feed them, and of course that includes trying out different loads/manufactures. Personally I see that as part of the fun.

All kidding aside...set some some limitations or some collection goals if you feel guilty about burying yourself in guns. Then stop. HA!

I myself have a tendency to be slightly OCD, and will duplicate guns in my collection "just in case". Just in case o' what, I ask myself later? I only got two hands!

On the other hand, besides SHTF scenarios (how likely is this in Fort Worth Texas), I do tell myself that guns are a solid investment and will only keep appriciating, along with ammo... and we can't forget the possibilities of a ban...yadda yadda yadda...babble babble slobber drool....:D

Wait till you discover handloading!

:D

Consider, in the ultimate SHTF, your guns can have another important function. Of course use, but think about all the spares you accumulate, that is potential wealth, or even food. And don't limit yourself to the defense guns, get a battery of sporting arms and ammo. It's ALL GOOD!

One of my favorite stories about SHTF comes from one of the "survivalist" writers of the 70s. It goes something like this (short form)

hungry guy: How much for a chicken?
Farmer: What ya got?, money's not a whole lot of good right now.
hungry guy: I got Krugeraands (gold).
Farmer: Hmmm, well gimme half a dozen and I'll let you have a chicken.
hungry guy: Hey, each one is an ounce of gold! They're worth $XXX dollars each!
Farmer: Well, just consider it an expensive chicken!

Same story, a little different,

Smart hungry guy: How much for a chicken?
Farmer: What ya got?
Smart hungry guy: I got half a box of shells that fit your old Winchester.
Farmer: How many chickens you want?

The point is, no matter how bad things get, things that are useful in the real world always have value. Sometimes a value beyond price.

As far as when does it end? When your kids go hungry because you spent the grocery money on guns & ammo, you need to cut back.

No, and now that you've crossed the EBR line it'll only get worse. Next you'll be wanting something with a little more umph than the 5.56mm so you'll start looking at FALs and AR10s ... then you'll realize you don't have a good precision rifle so you'll need a bolt gun to go with your autoloader ... then you'll think "hey, I'll get a C&R so I can get ammo and other stuff at dealer pricing" and you'll get bit by the milsurp bug ... and those things are cheap ... like candy (but like candy you end up with "just one more" a few dozen times).

Then, if you have any money left over you'll start thinking about NFA goodies.

:D :D If I were you I would quit buying guns and start buying training. The more confidence with the guns you have the fewer you feel like you need. I know this is true cause I am down to about 57 guns now:D

jj:banghead:

Real SHTF preparedness? Less guns, more "boring" useful stuff (the kind of stuff you and everybody else would wish you had later).
Yes, guns are infinitely sexier than food, water filters, and medicines- I feel your pain. ;)

Why end up having to trade guns/ammo for mundane supplies when you could set yourself up now?

There are a lot of folks who have an impre$$ive SHTF arsenal to protect... a few MREs and a can or two of SpaghettiOs in the cupboard- whee!
The unsettling thing is, in truly dire circumstances, Sgt. SpaghettiOs is eventually going to be ravenously hungry and armed to the teeth.

I always wonder how many of our fellow gun owners would fall into that category.

There is no cure for the "disease" and the only treatment is the occasional procurement of a new firearm. Sorry that you have become infected. ;)

You know, it's really not that bad...me, I'm only 6 guns away from completing my collection...again :scrutiny:
Face it, you've got it bad :neener: Just like everyone else here ;)

Then you need spair parts for your spare parts...

(Lets face it, some springs... are more likely to wear out. It would be a shame to have 2 or 3 guns go down for the lack of a $0.50 spring, or an extractor.)

I've already gotten into the accessorizing. All Glocks except one have Tru-Glo TFO's and Lasermax internal sights.

Don't know if I'll be able to afford that treatment on the newest additions too.

Also, I plan to place an order for recoil springs and mag springs soon.

And an order for at least 3 Glock tools.

and as for the AR's.... I figure 25 HK AR mags would be a good number. Or should I make it 30?

I also need more knives, flashlights, and ammo.... plus I've thought of picking up some smoke grenades just for fun.

I already bought some handcuffs too.... but those are just for looks. I don't have any intention to use them.

I'm addicted.

And I've been put on hold. Seems I'm the most recent victim of identity theft, so I'll have to sort this out before I can go on with any more gun purchases. :(

Hmmmm . . .

Dude, you're not married, are you?

A married guy would be whining about all the abuse he's getting from his spouse for overspending the budget.

Tell you what: get out a bit more. See some girls. Have some dates. Take 'em shooting.

Before too long, you won't have to worry about what you're spending on guns.
