I have decided to replace my AK with something different after having it so long. I'm leaning toward something semi-auto chambered in .308. Advice and links to websites are welcomed.

A Tromix converted Saiga in .308 from FBMG, Inc.?..:D

Keep the AK 7.62x39, supplement it with a .308 to complete the battery

by an m1a and you will not regret it. when i bought mine i couldnt really afford it but i scrimpt, saved and sold two other guns including a sagia ak. i have never regretted spending the extra money. dont under estimate the value of the sights alone. there is no point in having a .308 rifle with sub .308 sights. if you buy a rifle i also recomend some training. appleseed taught me alot and was the best $70 i have ever spent.

Saiga (AK) in 308:

Does anyone have any experience with CETME. Supposedly, it is a knock off of the HK G3. I don't know much about them other than I have seen them for $350. Any info?

Saiga (AK) in 308:

and here is one that has been converted by moving the trigger group, adding pistol grip furniture, and the barrel treaded for a muzzle brake. The 20 round magazines are available from FBMG.

it's an early version of the G3/91, HK developed it further, CETMEs are ok, just don't pay too much.

M1a and FAL in that order. It would help to know what you are looking to do with the rifle. For Zombie (or other) attacks, to be able to reliably and accurately hit them out to 500+ yards, the two above rifles are my favorite choices. Parts and mags are easy to get. The Standard of either of them will function great and have the accuracy needed to reach 500+ yards. Plenty of rarely used ones out there at a good price.

Good luck, but get to an Appleseed shoot and they will get you the skills to slay Zombies out to 500+ yards, in a hurry;)

The CETME is the precursor to the G3/HK91. They can largely be considered the same rifle, with minor parts differences.

They are about as un-ergonomic as a rifle can be, but they are reasonably accurate and (if you get one that's built properly) are quite reliable. CAI built most all CETMEs that you'll find, and their QA/QA was pretty spotty. I have two good ones, but there's a .25 probability that any one that you find will have significant wear issues (ground bolt heads, etc) that render it undesirable. Magazines are dirt cheap - you can get HK G3 alloy mags for $2 each.

The days of $350 CETMEs is long gone. Average asking price right now seems to be $500 for a decent one, and I bought one NIB recently and paid more than six bills for the privledge. Still, they are cheaper than a converted Saiga or any FAL worth it's salt - if cheap is what you're after.

I have an early CAI FAL that's working well, but I don't think that I like it as much as a Saiga. It's certainly heavier, and the silly charging handle is on the wrong (left) side.

In order of preference, assuming you don't want to spend infinite dollars on a Fulton build...

SA M1A, Scout Squad
SA M1A, Standard, or perhaps loaded
FN-FAL
PTR-91
SAIGA
CETME

I didn't list any AR type .308s, that's just a personal thing.

M1A...

After owning many .308's, I have fallen for an M1A. I want multiples. I have a SOCOM now and love it. I think ideal would be a M1A Scout. No matter what M1A/M14 platform you choose, you'll love it.

That being said, it's hard to beat the price-point of a Saiga, but high-cap mags are not plentiful yet - are they? I have had and seen enough bad experiences with CETME's not to want to play. If you like that desighn go for an original HK, (if you can afford it), or a JLD PTR-91....

I like FAL's have an FAL, but don't love them - just feel awkward to me, but that's just personal opinion. If you can find em, shoulder em and preferably fire em, I'd buy what feels best, (and my bet is it will be an M1A)...

There's an ongoing group buy of PTR91s in various flavors in the trading post. Just in case you decide on that route.

All good recommendations, but no one mentioned my beloved DPMS LR 308 Panther. They are more accurate out of the box than any of the above mentioned rifles. I can say this because I've owned the HK91/FAL/M1A/ Cetme and none of those rifles came close to the accuracy of the DPMS.

My list for .308's would go something like this....

1) Smith Enterprises M1A.

2) Springfield NM M1A.

3) Springfield M1A SOCOM.

4) Springfield M1A Scout.

5) DSA FAL with medium length fluted barrel.

6) Original H&K 91.

7) PTR-91 by JLD Enterprises (solid H&K 91 copy).

8) One of the new Galils sold by Atlantic.

That would be the order I'd go in anyway.

I haven't ever fired one of the Smith Enterprises M1A's, the PTR-91 or the Galil, but I've heard good things about them all. The rest (the M1A, the FAL and the H&K) have all been around for a long time and are basically the standards by what every other .308 semi-auto former military style rifle is judged.
