CAS HanWei Bowie

It looks like a real knife to me, which is all you need for a knife fight.

This bowie doesn't look very historical. If you really want to practice American big blade fighting, you'd need a sharpened top edge -which is one of the real strengths of bowie/big blade fighting styles.

That Sheffield Bowie on the Cas Hanwei site looks like a more fearsome weapon to me.

Seeing where you live, you can probably learn more practical knife skills locally using big bellied knives.

Any opinions as to whether the deep fullering weakens the blade?

Also, is 440C too brittle a steel to use on an 11" blade length knife?

nice looking blade. . . . .

fullering makes the blade lighter and more responsive but blade steel would be a more important factor in overall brittleness. Many swords have been made over the centuries with single or multiple fullers so don't worry about that in a shorter bladed weapon like a Bowie knife. 440C would not be my first choice in a fighting knife because it can be more brittle than 440A for instance and neither of the 440 series most often encountered would be my choice if a carbon tool steel blade were offered in the same design. I agree with CWL about the sharpened swedge - most historical Bowie knives had that feature and their narrower blade designs made them superior fighting blades IMHO.

I have the Outrider and don't consider it to be a good fighter. It is very poorly balanced. The other Paul Chen Bowies from Cas, Hunter, Orleans, etc., are pretty good and available at good prices.

The Laredo or Natchez Bowies from Cold Steel and any of the Ontario Bagwells are much better balanced than the Outrider. The Bagwells are less expensive than the CS knives. You could get a custom done for well under the MSRP of the Natchez, though.

To Hso,

I bought an outrider bowie yesterday and it seems that it comes with an unsharpened edge straight from the factory. Did yours also come with a blunt edge? What is the best way to sharpen such a large knife?

Puncha,

Mine was sorta sharp when I got it, but I don't see any point in sharpening it since it's balanced like a crowbar.
