And what the hell was she doing cocking a pistol while she pointed the barrel at her 6 YEAR OLD SON. Sounds like she just shot him and made up some bullsh*t story.

Well lets see...? .45 hits 9 year old boy COM, and he is still alive? So much for that theory (caliber war related). LOL

Not to make light of this sad story, but glad he will probably survive.

There really are people that dumb, so I wouldn't be surprised if the woman's story is true. I just hope the kid survives and also doesn't turn into an anti as a result of that stupidity.

I believe that there was more behind this than the story lets on. She not only accidently fired the pistol once, but TWICE- which would mean 2 seperate pulls of the trigger. I would like to hear her explanation for that fact.

Involuntary reaction to the noise, blast, recoil, of the first shot would be my guess.

Yep, I agree. I recently heard in a training course that the most common occurence of an AD is immediately following another AD. The involuntary reaction is to an unexpected shot is to clench your fingers into a fist...it doesn't take much pressure to squeeze off a second shot -- especially if that second shot is single action.

Before he boyfriend taught her to load a pistol, he should have taught her to keep her finger outside the trigger guard and in register up against the frame!

Although it is a genuine mistake,at the end of the day,it is one thing and one thing only:'poor gun handling'.Colt and other manufacturers supply user manuals for every gun that they make,and they emphisize on safety and correct gun-handling .It's rather like the Met cop in London,who accidently shot a colleague with a .44 magnum and I am relieved that the kid is still alive and recovering in hospital,after her stupidity.I hope that she hangs her head in shame and acknowledges that one stupid mistake could have cost her,her son's life and possibly time in prison.

Bad things don't happen in the morning. Just how nothing bad happens in nice neighborhoods.

I don't blame the mother, I blame the boyfriend. He hands her a gun, clearly doesn't explain to her how to handle it safely and does so in an environment were if there IS an accident, there are people around who can be hurt.

Irresponsible means you know what you SHOULD be doing, but you don't do it. If she's just ignorant of how a gun works, especially with some idiot not stopping her, it's not her fault at all. There are, sadly, a lot of people out there aren't sure what a trigger is or where the bullet comes out.

Her boy has a hole in his gullet. He doesn't need his mother in jail.

That being said, if in fact she WAS irresponsible and is just a crappy mother/person....HANG 'ER!

Yes the boyfriend is a total dumbass,but she shouldn't of handled the gun,if she didn't know how to operate it.He should have shown her properly but she had the choice of not accepting it,due to her ignorance of guns.

But that's the whole point. If I come up to you as a trusted friend with a whosiwhatsit and you know they can be dangerous but have never used one and I say, I'm going to show you how to use this because I know how. And you then do what I tell you and it kills someone. I forget to mention that if you press the red button and the yellow button at the same time, it kills the nearest poor slob. Is it your fault? Of course not. You believed me, you trusted me and I failed you.

She probably thought she was receiving training and he wouldn't have given it to her with any of those shiny bangy things in it. And being someone ignorant of guns, she didn't know she was getting bad advice.

If anyone should go to jail, it should be the person who intentionally put the LOADED weapon into the hands of an untrained individual. He put her life in danger and obviously her children's lives as well.

Poor kid.

Is pressing charges on her going to make her less negligent in the future? I would think shooting her kid would be enough of a lesson with out the state getting involved.

As for shooting a .45 twice, I guess you guys don't own 1911's, I can bumpfire a full magazine making it basically full auto. little limpwristing and a light touch on the trigger is all it takes.

Instead of this guns are evil culture trying to reduce accidental deaths, maybe there should be education and 4 rules discussions? The 4 rules work if you follow them.

The 9 year was up and about at 1 in the morning.....

I am not saying it was intentional on her part...or his...but something is definitely not right with this story.

You see I live in Tampa and here we had a little incident perpetrated by a guy named Hank Earl Carr.

Not mentioned in the story below, his girl friend, the boys mother, lied to the Police about his identity and the circumstances of the initial shooting.

I should also mention that FHP patrol officer James Crooks was my friend we went to the University of South Florida together for 4 years, he is missed.

On the morning of May 19, around 10:30, Carr carried the young son of his girlfriend Bernice Bowen into a fire station. The boy had a gunshot wound to the head, but the circumstances of the injury were unclear — first Carr claimed that the boy was dragging a rifle and walking around when it accidentally discharged, but later he said that he himself had been holding it when it discharged.

Carr, having told police he was Joseph Bennett, the father of the child, ran back to the site of the shooting while being pursued by police. Threatening an officer with a rifle, he dropped it and again ran away, and this time was caught and handcuffed. Tampa Police Department detectives Randy Bell and Ricky Childers took him back to the apartment where the boy had been shot to continue to interview him. On the trip back to the police department, with Bell and Childers in the front seats and Carr sitting behind them, handcuffed in front, Carr successfully unlocked his handcuffs with a key he carried on his person, and disarmed Childers by snatching his Glock handgun from his shoulder holster. In the struggle that ensued, Carr shot both detectives in the face, killing them at the scene.

Exiting the car, he carjacked a pickup truck and fled. After briefly visiting his mother and refueling at a local service station, he got on Interstate 75 heading north. The first police officer in pursuit was James Crooks, and as he approached, Carr veered onto an exit ramp, braked, and exited the truck. As Crooks also braked to a stop, Carr approached and shot him twice in the head, killing him instantly.

Getting back in the pickup truck, Carr fled as multiple police cars and a police helicopter pursued him in a high speed chase and gunfight. With his tires blown out and running low on ammunition, Carr exited the interstate and entered a convenience store, where he took as a hostage Stephanie Kramer, a pregnant clerk. For the rest of the afternoon, he remained in the store, as nearly 200 police officers surrounded him. The WFLA radio station conducted phone interviews in the midst of the crisis, later drawing criticism from both journalism experts and police. At 7:20pm, Carr released Kramer and shot himself as a SWAT team forcibly entered the building.
