Magtech is good for cheap plinking ammo. Georgia Arms loads a decent round that's $19 and mild enough for plinking (chrono'd at 1100fps from my 5.5" Redhawk).
Otherwise, all I shoot in 44mag are my own handloads. 300g@1300fps. W00T!
As with any firearm, no two will shoot the same ammo the same way. You'll have to work up a load for each one. It's best to use .44 mag cases loaded to .44 Special velocities if you don't want the blast etc of the magnum. It eliminates the ring of lube gunk in the cylinders and the chamber.
