I have a savage mod12 22-250, loads it doesn't like shoot 1/2" groups, loads it likes you need a magnifiing glass to prove there is more than one shot on the paper I regularly take the eyes out of groundhogs at 190-210 yards I took a coyote at 350 yards If I can see a groundhog he is in danger

depends on the rifle and the load...

the Savage's choice to give their main-line .223s a 1in9 twist rate makes them finicky eaters when trying to reach 600. heaviest bullets you'd be able to run would be 68 or 69gr and those are on the fine edge of too heavy for the factory barrel. So many times it takes patience and time to find the load(s) your particular rifle likes for shooting to 600.

that being said a few years back shot a couple of the local 600yrd prone matches using a 12FV in .223 and Black Hills blue box 68gr and i'm sure that every hit outside the X was my fault not the rifle.

are you asking this b/c you already have a savage in .223 and want to shoot to 600, or are you trying to decide if you can get away with getting a .223 and still do the things you want?

personally when i get back around to buying another bolt-action target rifle (sold the FV) i'll most likely get a .308 b/c i have acess and the desire to shoot 600 and 1K on a regular basis.

B/A? And my Model 12 has 1:7 twist, shoots Black Hills 77g really well at 500 meters.

Any shot within the range of the bullet can be made if you are willing to do the math. I know people that can hit a man sized steel target at 400 yards with 7.62x39 or at 150 yards with a .45. The trick is knowing bullet drop and wind.

It come from the factory that way or is teh barrel aftermarket?

I know that there are 1in7 .223 12FVs and 10FPs out there, but i'm nto sure of when they were made, and as i undetstand it they're rare... would love to have one, would save having to get a 1in7 from Sharpshooter supply when i finally build my next .223 bolt action.

Yes, Savage is starting to offer a choice between 7 and 9 twist in their .223s. I am tempted to special order a 12 F-T/R .223x7 to go with my .308 12BVSSS, even though my (modified) AR is as accurate as most bolts.

I got my butt kicked by a guy with an AR yesterday at 500 meters. I think my gun is fine, I just have a lack of talent.

Several factory stock 12 F/TRs did exceptionally well at the F-Class Nationals last week, from what I've read.

Friend of mine shot between two Savage factory F-T/Rs at the Tennessee state championship and said they did as well as the high priced spread.

yep with the right twist right weight right charge they can be accurate out to 900 we built a rifle for my pop to shoot target

he out shoots some of the 308 boys these days how ever i wouldn't recommend hunting with these at long range

Yessir it can. With the 1:9 twist, you're probably gonna be limited to the Hornady 75gr HPBT (not the AMAX), but it'll get out there. The 77 Sierras may work - they didn't out of my 10FP.
