I recently got a Benchmade 10750 "Vex" and I'm very impressed with it.

Don’t be annoyed — the new VEX™
weighs in with a hefty combination
of features, technologies and value.
Enhancements such as a round
thumb-hole opener, crowned blade
spine, BP Titanium coated blade,
liners and clip, along with G10 handle
scales make this one force to be
reckoned with.

Best of all, it's well under your price range. For an everyday carry knife, I think you'd be pleased with it. I am.

If you want something that is a heavy duty blade for using, consider the SOG Tomcat III or the new Vulcan. They pretty much come razor sharp and you can definitely cut stuff with them. I just got a Vulcan. Been playing around with it. Man, it just slides open with a flick of the wrist (not assisted opening). Fast as many switchblades and safer. Infinitely more practical blade design. Price is in the $90-$115 range.

My everyday pocket folder is a Swiss Army knife (SAK) Adventurer model. Works well for me with its long blade and it's pretty thin in your pocket. Also has toothpick, awl, screw drivers (phillips and flathead) and the useful little twizzers. It get used a lot and runs about $20-$25. At that price you can abuse it and replace it when the time comes.

Benchmade Skirmish (630) the fullsize not the mini. It comes with a 4.3 inch S30V blade, and locks up like a steel vault.

Law Enforcement use... I still recommend the SOG Vulcan. The Benchmade Skirmish would be an excellent choice as well.

i second the vote on Emerson. love my HD-7. definitely for hard use, solid lock. Benchmade with an Axis Lock next, although not the Mel Pardue (too thin).

12-34hom,

Are you allowed to carry a fixed blade?

Do you intend to carry it primarily as a working tool or primarily as a SD/retention weapon?

hso, yes i could carry a fixed blade - this would be for a "working tool" - i carry a K - Bar - TDI for SD porposes.

If i were to go with a fixed blade i would prefer a blade lenght of 4 inches or less.

12-34hom,

Now we're getting somewhere!

Let's look at what you'll use it for. Can you tell us the various things you'll do with the blade?

There are plenty of fixed blade knives with blades from 2-4 inches that may work for you. The greater strength of the fixed blade may be just what you're looking for if you intend to pry/pound with the knife.

Question for everyone.
Would a "duty" knife have advantages if it was fully insulated against electrical current? I know insulated knives/tools have benefits for certain applications, just curious if this would be necessary for LEO applications in case of "first responder" needs.

The Spyderco Chinooks are extremely tough knives, and would make excellent SD knives if you somehow ran out of other options.

That said, there really aren't that many knives I'd deliberately pry with. I seem to recall hso has a mini pry bar, but I've seen very small pry bars for just a couple of bucks at Harbor Freight. Here's a 9 3/4 one, but I've seen ones as small as 5" or so, and even sturdier. A very small pry bar could be easily integrated into your kit with almost no inconvenience, and it certainly won't look like you're trying to turn SEEL like a Stryder might.

I have a Benchmade Griptillian that I carry all the time. I bought it at a gunshow 3 years ago. Best knife Ive owned so far, also the only knife Ive ever paid this much for too. But its been worth it. Being left handed the Axis lock is the best thing ever. Quick and easy. I cant see myself ever goin back to a liner lock, or lock back knife again.
