hello high road, I just posted my first collection pic a little while ago(http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=312254), let me first say, I just graduated the unit level armorer's course, and now am proudly the unit armorer for my unit:D , its been a long fight, trying to get this position since coming back from deployment downrange last year, just needed more involvement in the weapons field, its a passion, i know some understand , but anyways my collection is simple and practical , not ultra tactical as so many people are hung up on. Now my SAR 1(7.62x39) is what it is , a Kalashnikov , simple, reliable and effective have a hunting/target rifle, my savage 110 in 30-06, and a simple shotgun, mossberg maverick 12 gauge, as well as the handguns. But I need/ want a main battle rifle, and my heart is set on a FN-Fal ,dsa carbine length with fixed stock and may be with a simple red-dot that will be it , but as I look around at the various shops around here and on many sites on the Internet, the M4/M16/AR-15 reigns as king or so it appears, like today , my ak trigger group came apart at the range today, was put in wrong, by me:eek:, but I walk into a shop and ask do you do any work on AK's his response was , why dont you " upgrade" to an ar, I got angry , I dont know why but my heart is set on 308, but this store sells M1a's , and HK-91 copies but no mention of them, just the ar's, what am I missing, am I one of the few would love the idea of a fn-fal 308 backed up by a glock 45acp instead of a ar-15 and sidearm of choice(beratta,1911.etc) just curious, I guess its just taste, just would like to get some feedback, opinions  sorry if i got a little long winded but you all have been helpfull before, so I know Im in the right place

I know a thing or two about FAL rifles. Not as much as some of the old timers here, mind you. The FAL is my favorite MBR. It adjustable, ergonomic, solid, and easy to maintain. Indeed, I like it enough that I find myself working for a FAL manufacturer.

I own all the rifles you mentioned except for the HK91. Given the choice of a main battle rifle, I'd take the FAL over any other choice any day. The M1A would be a close second.

Since you already have an AK-patterned rifle, you sound like a perfect candidate for a Saiga 308.

Perhaps the shopkeep meant an AR-10 (which is normally in .308), not an AR-15. I prefer the ergonomics of the AR-10 as I have been shooting such weapons most of my life and they perform in a wonderful and predictable manner.

That said the FAL is a fine MBR and well designed. Should you find a good one it should serve you well.

FAL
HK91 (or clone)
M1A
Saiga
AR-10

Any of those will serve you well. Think about budget, whether you want a scope, accuracy conerns, etc.

Congratulations - give the man a beer :D

I'm very fond of FALs personally... but everyone's different. For "educational purposes" ;) , I'd suggest something with which you're not already familiar
