Hello to all,

I've been snooping here trying to learn more about shotguns, and have a few questions:

1. I really like the remington 870 and I think after reading around here that it is going to be first. As I was looking around at prices, I saw this one at buds for $269 shipped: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/95059

Is this a good deal?

2. It says the barrel length is 18" and the capacity is 6 rounds. Sometimes the pictures at buds don't match the gun, but that seems to me that with 18" and 6 round capacity that it has the extension already. Is that correct?

3. Is there any legal issues to be aware of with an 18" barrel? I'd be willing to go with a bigger barrel if I had to, but 18" seems nice for in a house (and an indoor range).

Some background: My main reason for wanting one is for HD, for the enjoyment of shooting and coolness of a tacticool shotgun. I don't shoot skeet, and I don't hunt so I don't need anything multipurpose. My highest goal would be to maybe get a flashlight on it and possibly change the stock out if that one stinks or something. It just seems like that might be a good price.

I'm aware from my background in other types of firearms that I will need to practice, BA/UU/R, etc. I have defensive handguns that do the job now and have experience with them so I will not trust a shotgun as my only HD until I have experience with it, so I'm looking at this as a way to broaden my skills with firearms toward the goal of being competent enough to be confident in an HD situation.

Anyways, opinions and brotherly advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You might have cheek weld problems with the stock, if it isn't already rendered useless besides that. Now I have no experience with a stock like that but it doesn't look like it will hold up well.

I would imagine the stock could be swapped for another(spec-ops, maybe) if it didnt suit your needs. I am no shotgun expert, but dont see a poor cheek weld as being a huge problem on an HD shotgun. you wont be shooting groups, after all. The price is good, and like I said, you can add another stock if that one isnt to your liking. I think that would be a great, low priced HD weapon.

I have that same 870. It is a 6+1 capacity with extension already installed. It is a Remington "Premier Dealer" model. The stock is made by Butler Creek and it does eat my cheek up a bit. Good thing is numrich still has Speedfeed II sets for 28.50 plus shipping. http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?chrProductSKU=984070&chrSuperSKU=&MC=YJ Takes about 10 minutes, a couple hex keys and a slotted screwdriver to swap them out.

I swapped mine out, but kept the folder for later use. 299.00 plus the 30.00 Remington rebate is a good price on that model. The 18" cyl bore barrel throws good patterns at HD ranges and actually does pretty good with slugs to 25-30 yds for me. I still prefer my 20" rifle sighted barrel 870, but this one is pretty darn good.

That stock is made pretty solid though. I don't see it actually breaking any time soon it just rubs the cheek the wrong way under recoil.

I've bought two of those used speedfeed sets from numrich already. In good shape with only minor cosmetic defects. One of the two had some stencilled lettering from a range that they belonged to (rental guns i guess). Sanded it off with wet sandpaper and looks fine now. The other set looked almost new.

The ad on numrich also says something about the stock bolt and washer not included but both of mine were. If for some reason you don't get a stock bolt and washer if you decide to order from them you'll have to order one separately. The stock bolt on that folding stock is much shorter than what will attach the speedfeed.
