Hi,
It's been a while since I owned a MKII Government (still kicking myself for selling it) and I recently found a used MKII Target at a local shop. I'm pretty pleased with it :), but I would like to know what upgrades, modifications, add-ons, pimping, features your happy with, etc. everyone/anyone has on their Ruger(s). Pictures would be most appreciated.
Regards,
Greg

Ruger MkIII 22/45

Just picked up one barely used, with the box and all papers, for 225.00 for a junior shooter to use. It jams like mad, freezes shut on an empty case where you have to take it apart and pull the bolt to clear it....and that awful breakdown system to field-strip it.

I hope it smooths out as we break it in, but so far, its only worth using as trotline weight.

Blackfort, what ammo are you using? I hate the Remington green box. So I use only CCI.

Is that the problem? Or is it the Mk 3? How does the 3 design differ from the Mk 2? Cause this isn't the first time I've heard complaints about the 3.

Holy smokes Blackfork! That's just about the condition and price I paid for my MKII, but it's night and day in regards to performance. I've put about 600 rounds of Remington Golden Bullet and Federal American Eagle through mine and the only hiccup was the slide not locking back once. I did treat it pretty good with some MilTec-1 before shooting. I sure hope yours smooths out.
Regards,
Greg

Blackfork. My dad had a simular problem with his MKII target. The problem was that there was a nick in the edge of the chamber mouth. 5 minutes with some sand paper and it was fixed. So check your chamber and see if there are any burrs, gunk, pitting, or an out of spec chamber. Try wraping a piece of very very fine sand paper around a cleaning rod and polish the chamber a little without touching the throut or rifling. But first try to call up Ruger and and see if they will fix it without making you pay anything.

Blackfork,
Ruger's auto pistols usually smooth on out after the initial 300 rounds or so. I hope your's does too. Ruger will honor the warranty even though you bought it used if you decide to let them have a go at it.

For the OP, here's my old MKII Government Target Model.

Only addition are Williams Gun Sight fiber optic sights, I can't speak highly enough of how greatly they assist my accuracy.

XavierBreath,
Thanks for posting that beautiful pistol. Great photo also; would make a great desktop wallpaper! Is that trigger adjustable for pre-travel as well as the over travel?

Greg

heres one of mine- a couple mark II gov'ts sit in the toy chest too... I love em. The one MKII gov't has a trigger job and a scope mount and it drives tacks...

this one is a MKII with volquartson hammer and a bead blast job I did on the upper

I'd put up a pic, but mine's a lot like Bond007's which, by the way, has cool sights. Did you install them? Was it easy?

@Blackfork, I had a few hiccups in mine, mostly before the 500 round mark. Taking it apart gets easier. Now that it's well broken in, I hardly ever have feed problems.

Great guns and photos! Lot of nice touches in there.:)

bond007 - Thanks for the link and the photo; I've wondered what they would look like on a Ruger MK series.

Regards,
Greg

I gave 160$ for it in a pawn shop. It has'nt had a single malfunction with high velocity ammo.

Here's mine being used in the field. I upgraded the sear to a volquartsen (huge difference) and added a red dot sight. This is my favorite handgun to plink with. What a blast!!!

Response to PM shared:

I'm very happy. I always found the pistol accurate, but couldn't get the accuracy I knew I/it was capable of while staring at a set of black bars.

I mounted a red dot, but found the pistol quite bulky and actually slower.

The Williams sights are simple to install and adjust. The only difficult part was removing the stock rear sight, but instructions on doing so were included by Williams.

I can't recommend the replacement sights highly enough and think they were among the best $50 I've spent. I don't have any tips/tricks, as they're really just that easy and simple. I hope you find a solution you enjoy.

Best of luck,
Matt.

Those Things look so nice.
I have a question though. Are the bull barrels more accurate then the tappered models?
