Northern Illinois University Shooting

Police press conference is reporting one of the handguns was a GLOCK (unknown caliber at this time) and a "smaller caliber" handgun (based on the fact that at least one magazine was found). Make/model of shotgun not reported.

BTW ....

Reporter: What was the shooter wearing?

Police Chief: Clothes.

Besides the stupid questions, I can't believe the media expects answers to everything within two hours of the incident.

What can a responsible armed citizen DO in the face of such a senseless attack?

As others have alluded to: Shoot Back!

It seems to me that in pretty much every incident like this when the aggressor is confronted with equal or greater force the game is over. Whether that be an armed citizen or the SWAT teams from the surrounding twelve counties waiting outside, when there are people on scene shooting back or capable of doing so the aggressors seem to off themselves pretty quick, if they aren't hit by a good guy first.

With the climate the way it is in Illinois, if anybody had been carrying concealed and shot the gunman, the police would have arrested the guy who stopped the criminal.

It's that messed up in Illinois.

empty holster...emd001

+1+ idea
coodernate a day, perhaps march 3rd. nation wide belt holsters, subtle styles that can be said to be a cell phone holster ( and put one in ). as in " mr. administrator...it is so i can call for help.

I don't think it would be poor taste to scream right now, "Why can't my kids have a means to protect themselves?!"

If that would be poor taste and if I had a kid in that school, I would quickly be recognized as the most distasteful parent on earth. "Change gun free zones now!" would be my mantra.

Would actual holsters be illegal or against school policy (college level)?

I think empty real holsters would be awesome.

I am disturbed buy the shooting and the complaining and the general lack of care concern and thoughts for those killed and or injured. It is ok to talk about the gun control issues and such but even if you do not post it please just take a minute and give a prayer for those killed and injured. Just my .02 thanks

Eric,

I'm sorry that you've misinterpreted the posts. I don't know of a more caring crowd than responsible gun owners. We're also a crowd that's interested in solutions...now.

You know if I were to go back to college I think I would carry my ccw even it was against school policy. With all this crap happening I'd rather live and break the rules than abide by gun-free zone restrictions and end up dead. I mean honestly this is getting pathetic, the criminals don't care about gun-free zones so who is honestly supposed to be stopped from carrying, law abiding citizens, that's who. So these zones force citizens that normally are able to try and defend themselves from maniacs like this to become sheeple.

The madness needs to end!

What can a responsible armed citizen DO in the face of such a senseless attack? How would you make a difference with your pocket pistol against a well-armed madman in a crowded lecture hall (or mall, or church, etc)? You may end up heroically dead, or worse, you may injure other innocents. What is the proper response in such a situation?

Well, from what I understand, the lowlife stopped in the middle of the lecture hall's stage, and reloaded.

I don't know about you, but from 100', with a stationary target, I'd have the guy at least leaking. And that's with a tiny .380.

Guys. Call your childrens' campuses, and media. Ask WHY your children are defenseless. Don't say a darn thing about guns or concealed carry. Just ask why your kids' security isn't better. Let the talking heads come up with the idea on their own. Then they'll have ownership of it, and run with it, instead of shutting down.

Or we can sit here, and tell each other how smart we are...

Sigh.

See recent Colorado church case. Improvise as necessary according to personal skill level.

I'm serious. Get a hold of unbiased facts of that case. The security guard in that case laid out a blue print the best she could for your specific question. The answer is right there.

as a college student, and someone that is in the process of becoming a NRA instructor i am sick and tired of this stuff... every day i sit in a classroom with some 40 other students... and should someone attack, my best defense would be to hide behind other people so that they got shot first...

every day, i walk through over 300 yards of parking lots to get to my car... and should someone attack, my best defense would be to run...

see my state (NC) has mandated that no one may carry a means of defense on ANY school campus... but at the same time, schools have no liability if i get hurt in attacks such as these and police have no liability for failing to protect me...

when i see stories like the one today... i do feel sadness for the hurt... but damn, im angry... angry at a system that puts legal liability above my safety... angry at a society that glorifies *******s like this killer and breeds more... angry at high and mighty school administrators that think that they know how to best protect students even though they are not held liable... angry at liberals that demand that they know what is best for the world by taking away peoples god given rights to defend themselves... angry at a media that will not acknowledge that when people have the ability to defend themselves, that they will stop being attacked...

sadly, no one has the guts or the integrity to stand up and demand that these things stop... to fix the problem, it is going to take a lot more than just some useless laws... society will have to change... but this change wont be possible while scumbags like this shooter are allowed to live... someone needs to start taking the trash out of this world...

ive already made it very clear to my family that if i am ever a victim of a "gun free zone" shooting... that they are to sue all the way up to the supreme court... that they are to not rest until every news agency is running stories about how the school denied me my right to defend myself...

I couldn't agree more. But don't get shot-gunned in the process - and don't miss!

The alternative of "ducking and hoping" is worse.

You may be thinking these maniac shooters are people of unbelievable bravery. I'm thinking the opposite. I view these gunman as extreme cowards to target gun free zones in the first place. The first second they realize that bullets are flying in their direction, the maniac shooter would buckle like a 150 pound quarterback in the NFL.

In fact, the maniac shooter would probably shoot himself before one of his enemies could take the credit for taking him out. They all kill themselves anyway, right? They obviously don't want the state or anybody else to have the satisfaction.

How Many of These?

How many more will die before people understand that the police are not there to protect you, but rather to "mop you up".
This is so sad.
VATECH all over again. More sensless, un-necessary death.
Gun free IL.
Great.
Prayers for the victims and their families.
Same prayers,different day, different victims.
The big bad wolf just huffed, and puffed and more inoccent kids are dead.
When will the anti's get it?
:(

My oldest son is an unarmed college student here in VA. I worry about this kind of thing every day. He had friends who were at Tech last April. Our hearts and prayers go out to those familys of the dead and to the wounded in IL and everywhere else in America tonight where violence will go un-answered. In every un-armed area of our nation murders and acts of violence will happen which will make Anbar Provance look like disney world.

THIS IS SENSELESS!!! We as a people need to stand up to the senseless disarming of America and our loss of self protection in general. I am just sick over this.

As a college student this kind of situation deeply troubles me. The idea that I can be rendered defenseless in a situation because of the law; however, the BG can walk on to campus carrying whatever. Gun free zones only disarm those who are law abiding citizens, such as myself and you who are reading this. I am not saying this situation would have been prevented and people would not have been shot if students were allowed to ccw on campus. However, they would at least have had a legal right to defend themselves and a possibility that they BG could have been stopped earlier into his spree.

I do not want to use those who are victims to push a political agenda and I hope it does not appear that way. My heart and prayers goes to the injured and the families of those who were ruthlessly slain. Please remember these families as in your thoughts as well. Pain inflected upon undeserving people is one of the most heartbreaking things a human can witness.

Sad to say that this sort of copycat act doesn't surprise me at all. May the victims R.I.P and the shooter burn ......

I'll never understand why some person will go into a school and murder people they've never met. My god. I feel so terrible for the victims and their families.

I'm back in college myself and the more this sort of thing happens the more nervous I get. I own a pistol, but don't dare bring it with me - the odds are higher that a professor would see it and I'd get expelled.

Maybe the victims should sue the school for not guaranteeing their protection after ordering students to leave their legally owned firearms at home... after forking over several million dollars perhaps the administration would change their minds about CCW on campus.

And more importantly, it would set a precedent.

Sadly, money seems to talk louder than common sense these days.
