I've got a neat old 1963 tube-fed Ruger 44mag carbine. Shoots a bit to the left, and for the life of me I cannot get the rear sight to drift to the right enough to correct it.
So, I have a red dot lying around and tried in vain to mount it. Supposedly takes a Weaver 47 and 68 base. Well, unless they were packaged wrong, the two bases don't match in height!
Furthermore, this gun uses a small aluminum plate that rests inside the upper wall of the receiver with two threaded holes to mount the front base. VERY poor setup. Why on earth did they not thread the steel of the receiver like the rear?
Finally, someone before me has drilled and tapped two holes in the barrel for a scope base there as well.
Can anyone suggest bases that will work given I've got (3) places to mount bases?? Thanks much in advance.

I did.

Sorry, I can't figure out how to post a link to a previous thread, but, if you'll do a search for "Swamp Scout" in the Rifle Country forum, you'll find it. I had a scope mount installed forward on the barrel, Scout style. It was a fiasco in itself, but turned out OK in the end. Do another search for "Gunsmith Botched my Rifle" if you want to read about it.

Man that is a sweet gun. Put a nice little fixed 4x on it and you will love it.

Mine is very accurate with just about factory round I have used. My fav for hunting is Winchester Supreme 250s.

keano what kinda reddot is that?

im gonna pick up a mini-14 in september (when i turn 18) and i want to put a scout reddot on it

I put Weaver bases on mine, and yes they are different heights. The taller one goes on the barrel and the shorter one on the receiver. Believe it or not, they are level when you're done.

If somebody messed with the two pins at the front of the receiver, those are part of the action and were not intended to be D&T for a scope mount. There should be two holes on the barrel for the taller of the two mounts.

Also, I don't think that's aluminum in there. Check with a magnet. It's part of the hardened assembly that runs the bolt.

Yes, I've mounted an Eotech (for fun) on one of the bases. As they are so short, it really isn't as stout as a full-length Weaver rail. The Eotech mounts on only one.

I've also mounted a Leupold VXII 1.5-4, and that's just great. Low, close to stock, nice eye relief.

Did you check the muzzle for dings? Sometimes that can cause shots to go wildly in one direction or another...

In 1972 there was a sniper on the roof of the Howard Johnson hotel in New Orleans. The Ruger 44 carbine with the original dot scope is what the shooter (Mark Essex) used. I worked OK for him.

PBD902: The red-dot is a Tasco ProPoint PDP3.
dmazur's post reminded me; before I customized my carbine, I hunted with it for ten years with a fixed 1.5X Bushnell Banner "shotgun" scope on it, mounted in see-through rings. The rings are different heights, the tall one mounts on the barrel and the shorter one mounts on the receiver, using the rear two screws. Like he said, once mounted, the rings are level.
dmazur is also correct that the two screws on the front of the receiver are not for scope base installation.
In the photo's you can see the Warne Return-to-Zero rings as well as the XS Ghost Ring/white-line front post sights.
