I'm currently the owner of a snub 357, 44 Magnum, .22lr revolver, and Ruger P90 .45 ACP and former owner of a 9mm.

Cousin of mine finally been here long enough in Florida to be able to buy a gun and she had enjoyed shooting my Arcus 94C 9mm enough she had developed an affinity for Brownings so I let her have the it for a couple hundred so I could knock it out of inventory. I'm in the mood to own only four handguns right now given they are all in lockboxes secured in a locked closet rather than a nice large safe. Soon enough I'll be rid of my .22lr (it's a heritage rough rider a friend gave me rather than give me back the sixty bucks he owed me).

I'm looking at the XD .40 (subcompact, 4", or 5"). I carry my .45 as my second and my snubby as primary in my pocket and don't by any means feel undergunned when I just have the snubby (yes I actually load .357 and practice twice a week, a hundred rounds a practice) but the high capacity bug has bit me, call it crazy, call it paranoid but I feel if I'm ever forced to trade lead with an attacker in some crazy out of the blue situation, 13 rounds won't do. Admittedly my anxiety is a mix of Combat Handgunner and the article dealing with folks having too few rounds, and the whole mall shootings craziness in Salt Lake (he only had eight rounds and he ran dry and was just lucky enough for back up to arrive in time), I know it's odd but there's also the beneift of being able to convert the gun to fire 9mm and Sig .357 so I'll get the benefit of a multi-caliber gun.

Plus I understand the XD .40 is stout and rugged enough to handle Double Tap and Black Hills in small healthy doses and these would be the rounds I'd want to carry and practice with. I like the concealability of the subcompact but not the potential loss of potency in the short barrel so I'm looking to either the 4" or 5" in chief here. So if anyone owns one, and if they have used the conversion barrells it'd be appreaciatted, thanks.

I had a xd-40 in 5 inch. Never had any problems at all, but I traded it to get something a little smaller. In the five inch it is a pretty big gun. I would get the 4-in or smaller if you are going to conceal it. Some don't like the grip/trigger safety, but I never had any problems with it. I wish I still had it, but I couldn't afford keeping it AND getting something smaller.

Oh yeah, don't think you are crazy, I think people that only carry 5 rounds of .38 are crazy.

I own the 4" in 40. Failry new, not quite 1000 rds through it. 2 things I noticed at around 250 rounds. First, the slide loosened up (pretty tight at first). Second, the trigger got a bit smoother.

A good friend who is a MUCH better shot than I am shot a 12 round pattern about 2" across at 7 yds (First time he held an XD). So I'm guessing it's pretty accurate!

I really like it, and am looking to own the conversion barrels too.

XDm

I recieved my XDm yesterday (4 1/2" barrel)... I need to adjust the rear sight to the left a little, but it is VERY consistent!!!

My other XD (XD40 w/ 4" barrel) is great as well. Springfield XD's are my all time favorite pistols!!!:D

I am no expert, but as far as feel these are the best fit for me.

I also bought some $2 sticky gloves at Wally World and they work great for shooting!!!

FYI...DO NOT BUY SKYY PRODUCTS... THEY ARE JUNK!!!:cuss::cuss::banghead::fire:

i have 2 xd .40's, the service model and the sc model and i love them both, they have been 100 % reliable, and they are so fun to shoot, and accurate as any one could hope for them to be. even better with handloads, but even with factory chepo ammo they are good to go. mine have ate everything that i have feed them without hesitation. my service model has right at 6,000 through it. and my sc has close to 2,000. i would say that i would buy more but with the cost of ammo i would go with a 9mm if i was to buy another, and i am sure that i will in the future. i carry the sc, and i use the service for hd. i couldn't be happier.

I have an XD-40 Service and an XD-40 Subcompact and love them both. I've got at least 4000 rounds through the service with zero non-user-created malfunctions (can't blame the gun for not seating a magazine properly).

Both guns carry well, but the Subcompact is a little more concealable with its shorter grip.

An additional question about the XD. One of my LEO buddies has said that if you are not paying attention when assembling it, you can put a part in wrong, and it forks up the piece to the point where you have to send it back to the MFG.

I checked around online about it real quick, but didn't really find anything.

I've had mine apart countless times and never had a problem putting it back together. I think you'd have to be trying pretty hard to screw it up...

I love what I've heard about these guns. I just wish the designers would work on the guns' appearance. They all look like they were carved from blocks of wood!

I don't know what the prices are when compared to Glocks, but I've been told that the XDs are a great alternative.

Great photos BTW!

I bought an XD-40 4" back in March of this year, I've got about 400 rounds through it so far, outstanding pistol! Its very comfortable to shoot, very accurate, and the ergonomics are excellent for me. I'm very pleased.:)

Well, there has to be at least one guy that doesn't like the gun. So let that guy be me. I don't know why but it just isn't a gun that sees much shooting. I'm not particularly fond of the trigger. I don't like how stiff the button is that releases the magazine when it is full. And maybe because I shoot a lot of big bore pistols, the grip seems small and whimpy.

So, everyone can pile on me now. I know I've gone against the grain.

Still look better than "blocks". They are meant to be sturdy, dependable combat weapons, not safe queens for BBQ's!

I absolutely love mine (XD-40 4inch service model Bi-Tone) Purchased it yesterday and took it out shooting for the first time yesterday.

I actually like the fact that it is hard to drop a full magazine. I noticed while checking out one of my buddies S&W M&P's that the mag would drop sometimes while drawing from retention (Mag filled with snap caps). He said that it has happened to him before. When I realized that the XD was very difficult to drop a full mag I was happy.

I think the mag being concreted in place when the mag is full is a great thing. It will only come out if you want it to.

Ske1etor, that is a good point. Duly noted. I think mine is a little too stuff though. And, there has to be a point at which it doesn't need to be any stiffer. There might be a time when a full mag does need to be dropped. What if a problem occurs with the first round chambered and it takes three men and a large hammer to eject the magazine?

Xd 4ever

I love both of mine (XD40 and XDm).

The XDm is SOOOO awesome... you gotta get one!!!

I will put some pics on here as soon as I figure out how. Is it just copy/paste or does it need some kind of HTML code?

Thanks in advance for any help.:)

I also have a .40 Walther, and my wife carries a .40 Taurus.

She bought a 9MM Skyy, but it is at the factory for the 3rd time. It will never be a personal defense weapon... just an expensive paper weight.:banghead::cuss:

I will be sticking with Springfield... I think I may trade one of my AR's to get another XD of some type... I would like to get a sub- compact XD40.

It's not that hard to drop the mag. I understand what you are saying though. At a certain point it starts to get silly.

I appreciate all the feed back, there's a range not far from me that rents them for ten bucks a visit, the only downside is that they limit you to one shot one second, how am I supposed to test performance like that.

The Glock prices right near me as far as used goes is quite competitive in the 10mm department but...I'm not living somewhere (renting) that will let me reload out of respect for the owner so an XD .40 is the first on my list and later after I'm out of law school I'll pick up a Glock 20 and Glock 29, it's only two years away. I've just got poker winnings from the casino burning a hole in my pocket, I've got my break between summer classes burning a hole from painting, carpeting, landscaping, and pet sitting (800-1000 a week and a fifty to sixty hour work week). I'll be making my purchase in August if I pull an A in one class and a B in another, believe it or not but being able to purchase a gun has been an excellent motivator for good grades, lol, 3.3 for first year.:neener:

Congrats on the good grades... 3.3 what is that an F-???

Heck I would at least score a 54 (F+):scrutiny:...

Great grade point average!!! Just pullin' your ripcord dude!

Enjoy your collection, but also remember to enjoy the collecting.

I LOVE buying a new gun. It's like fu... I mean getting a new car.;)
