Taurus has a couple of real attractive 1911s priced under $600... Any feedback on these guns (reliability, accuracy, etc.)?... Thanks.

They really are a good value. For under $600 you would be hard pressed to find a better new 1911. People will tell you to "spend and extra $XXX and get a YYY". Get the Taurus and you will dig it.

Charles Daly has changed suppliers of their 1911 and I assume they too will be fairly good when they come out.

Though the finish on mine leaves something to be desired, I like it.

It was my first (and still only) 1911. If I had to do it all over again, I would still consider the RIA, but might end up going with the PT1911 again. However, if I could find a low cost stainless PT1911...that it the way that I would go.

Haven't shot one, but I've heard nothing but good things about them. Definitely a 1911 with a lot of bang for your buck.

I've had mine for 18 months or so. 100% reliable, accurate, no finish problems.

The finish is so-so , but the funtioning and accuracy has been phenomenal right out of the box . The Heinie Straight 8 sights are actually pretty nice to use .

I love my PT1911. Yes it is an "entry level" 1911 whatever that means. Mine has shot great since round 1. The only problem I have had is with the ambi safety. It "jammed" after reassembly so I had a smith replace it with a non ambi Wilson safety which I had planned on doing anyways.

General consensus is that the PT1911 is built to a higher quality level than the rest of Taurus' products. Those of us who own them like them- they shoot well, they shoot reliably, they are plenty accurate for a defensive pistol. The fit and finish on them is not up to the standards of Springfield Armory or Smith & Wesson, but the price isn't up there either.

If there is any weak point, it seems that some have had issues with the safety levers jamming/falling out, but otherwise it is a solid gun.

If you want to keep your price at $600 or below and you want the features offered, the PT1911 is your daddy, and it will serve well. But keep it mind it is built to a price point; it isn't a $1000 gun.

My one and only complaint is that the finish is pretty soft and wears away easily. I am having mine Duracoated. But it shoots as good as any other 1911 I have owned. Colt, Springfield, Kimber.

I am at 500+ rounds with nary an issue. The finish leaves a littleto be desired though. I have used the Brazillian mag specials with it, Wilson's, ACT_MAG, and Chip McCormick's without a hiccup.

I bought my PT1911B on December 18, 2007. $550 w/ the Heinie Straight-8 night sights. I have put 1795 rounds through it, about 70% Winchester White Box FMJ, 25% American Eagle FMJ, 5% Federal HST. Shoot between 150-300 rounds per session, usually about 200. I've cleaned it twice, once when I bought it (before shooting), and once at the 380 round count. I've had 4 malfunctions, all of the same type and situation. Three times during second shooting session, once during the fourth. Shooting left handed, double hand grip, the slide locked open before the magazine was empty. I'm pretty sure it was a result of a loose grip and my trigger finger knuckle or my right hand index finger bumping the slide lock lever up. I firmed up and adjusted my grip, hasn't happened since.

And yes, tomorrow is cleaning day... Muzzle end is so dirty, I can't see the forward dot...:uhoh:

I don't think I really like the Heinie sights so well, going to try some Trijicons or Tru-glows soon. The H-nite's add a considerable chunk (approx. $50) to the price, so if you know you don't need or like them, go with the plain ones.

I was going to get the 1911B-1, the version with the accessory rail, but had a miscommunication with the shop. I decided that the non-rail version on my hip was worth a heck of a lot more than waiting 2-3 months for the rail version. I may get the rail in a few months, heck, Christmas is coming, my birthday is next week, who knows. Rail adds about $100 to price.

It should come with 2 mags, I bought 2 more Taurus ones for a total of 4. (8+1)

I really haven't needed to use the hammer lock feature except when I was at my parents house at Christmas and all the rug monkeys were swarming (no kids at my house). They don't have a safe, so I unloaded, seperated ammo and gun to two different adult-reachable locations, locked the hammer down and put that key ring in my pocket. :scrutiny:

As for paragraph 1, yes, I do keep log books on each of my guns, habit from aircraft maintenance.

I have the Stainless pt1911. Have put over 1500 rounds FMJ, JHP, SWC through it with out a FTF or FTE. It took a little to get use to the Heine sights. I have enough faith in it that I use it as one of my CC weapons.

The only thing I changed out is the grips.

Taurus PT1911 you say.

The links were brought from other threads here.

So here's the story on the PT1911 as used by actual owners. This is just a fraction of what can be brought and it's the unvarnished truth.

If Soldier of Fortune magazine, Mas Ayoob, and other critical gun instructors/writers opine that the PT1911 is good, that something was done right by Taurus.

This despite "conventional wisdom" to the contrary that is not wise.

Notice is in the first link from here it was requested that the flammers and bashers stay away.

Notice how that was ignored.

Disrespect is an ugly thing to do.

The below are also from here.

Aaargh, I forgot one thing...

Sometime between my first shooting session and second cleaning, one of the grip screws fell out.:uhoh: I discovered it during the cleaning, as it was the first time I took the grips off. I also discovered that 2 of the remaining three screws were loose.

When I got back home (early January, I was visiting family over Christmas), I went to the store I bought it from to see what could be done. They do not stock small parts or do any gunsmithing, told me to call Taurus customer service. I called, they said they were currently out of grip screws, expected some in March. Called in mid-March, still out. Called in late April, still not available. Finally found what seemed to be the last set in town (Wilson brand) at a local shop, they are now installed with a touch of low-strength Loc-tite (the purple stuff).

From what I've heard, Taurus is supposed to have pretty good customer service, but demand for the PT1911 seems to be very high, and factory spare parts appear to be in short supply.

So, just as a reminder, any time you get a new gun, go over it completely, make sure all the hardware is properly tightened and check it over again after your first few shooting sessions. Goes double for used or surplus guns, don't ask how I know this... Yes, I am a slow learner:rolleyes:

The Taurus grip screws have oversize heads, so I wouldn't recommend keeping them around anyway, especially if you add new grips. Brownells carries plenty of screw types for 1911s.

Heck, if somebody wants 4 Taurus grip screws, PM me, and we can work something out. I replaced mine- they wouldn't work with the Alumagrips I mounted to the thing.
