What are the reputable brands of rings to mount an Aimpoint red dot to a flattop AR? I've heard good things about GG&G, but I don't know any others to even compare it to. Suggestions?

get the larue

edit: in addition to the mount, you are likely to receive a bottle of Dillo Dust (steak dry rub), a battlefield paint mixer, a bottle of Machine Gunners Lube (awesome stuff), a hat, a couple of bumper stickers about God blessing our snipers, a dillo bottle opener, ....seems like i'm missing something

at least, that's what i found in my last two orders.

Now that I have these choices... which ones are recommended? I'm sure some tend to be better than others.

I used a Knight's Model 98073 for my Aimpoint M# Comp. I'm not certain they still make that one.

The nice thing about the Larue is you will never be disappointed with that purchase. Great return to zero. Solid, rugged mount.

Whether or not it is worth the additional costs is a personal call. If you don't plan on swapping the optic between rifles or removing it a lot, then I imagine the $60 rings would do just fine.

Personally, I am always skeptical about mixing $400+ optics with chemical gun cleaners. One thing I like about the Larue mounts is that I know the optic will still be perfectly zeroed when I put it back on the rifle after cleaning.

If I don't remove the aimpoint when I clean the rifle, is it really that difficult to keep the solvent away from it? Or is it just some kind of prudence preventing a worst case scenario.

or you could do what I do... don't clean your AR. put 5000-10000 rnds through it and then buy a new one. building a new AR every autumn is becoming an enjoyable habit

Depends on how you clean it I guess. The spray cans and solvent tanks make fast work if you shoot a lot; but neither one is very amenable to optics on the rail.

Just a quick question,
Are Burris XTR rings any good??? I have seen them online and they look solid but I cant tell from a photo....
I would suggest those but I don't know much about them...

I have Leupold and Ruger Rings on my rifles....

I am honestly looking to get the best mount possible for 100 or less. If there is a huge quality gap there between mounts from 60-100 and the common ones in the 120's and 130's I'll spring... but if theres a reliable and steady mount for <= 100 that would be spectacular.

If you look around, you can get an Aimpoint factory QRP mount for less than $75. I have one, it works well. I also have Knight's and LaRue. I can't really say that the QRP is a lesser mount for what I do with my guns (play at the range a few times a month). It holds zero as well as my more expensive mounts. Besides, if it's good enough for thousands of soldiers and marines, it's good enough for me.

cbrgator, the mount/ring that you want to get most likely will be too low. The Knight on my M4 style AR is much taller. it allows you to set the front post and fold down rear sight if there's a problem with the Aimpoint.

Note the fold down rear sight. This one is regulated to 300 yards.
This mount is also designed to be removed and reinstalled quickly.

The LaRue COMP M2 Mount QD would be a good choice.

I have Larue, Aimpoint, and the Burris XTR rings. For removable mounts, the Larue is tops. The Aimpoint ring is nice, but the giant attachment screw sticking out the side is mondo lame.

If you don't plan on removing the optic, the Burris rings are quite adequate. You may have to dremel a small clearance bevel in the Burris ring top to clear the battery retainer, depending on what model Aimpoint you run.

Yes, very much so. I seem to recall seeing in print that you want a ring with 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" rise, and that parallels my personal experiences.

i didnt specify that i wanted any kind of rise. im not saying i dont want any rise, but i never specified that I did. I'm not really sure what height is best. I'm clueless to that subject.

for an AR, you need exactly the amount of rise you see in the pictures in csmkersh's post.

you will regret buying a shorter mount.

the 'standard' mount in your picture would be appropriate for mounting on an MP5 or something like that.

A 1.725" high mount will give you iron sights in the lower 1/3 of the optic and is the preferred height for a lot of shooters.

If you like the irons to be square in the middle of the optic, a 1.535" mount is the way to go.

(Both of these heights assume you are using a standard flattop AR - if you are using a different rifle or a gas-piston AR with a higher rail (POF, HK416) then the heights are different).
