I just inherited this gun from my father in law. One of his son's took it apart some years ago and remembers something springing out of it, so now the bolt will come right out and it does not fire.

What kind of costs am I looking at getting it worked on to get it back to working condition, or is it too hard to know with out taking it in to a gun smith?

L'attente,

Without having the rifle to look at it is going to be difficult to tell you what is missing or how much it will cost.

From a value stand point, most of it's value is going to be sentimental and only you can decide if what ever a smith wants to fix it is worth it.

Or, you can do it your self. If you can find someone that has a 511 that still functions and does not have missing parts, use it as a model to rebuild/repair yours. Here is an exploded diagram of the 510/511/512 as they are all pretty much the same, just different 'feed' styles.

Oh, and good luck, these old rifles can be very addicting once you figure out how they work, and thats just the fun part. :D

Rem 511-P

L'attente,

I have a Rem 511-P that has been on pest control duty for many decades and still going strong.
If you pull the trigger back and hold it there with the safety on "fire" while pulling the bolt back, the bolt will come out. It takes both hands to do this.
If you then push the bolt back in while holding the trigger back, the gun will not cock and cannot fire.

Does the trigger on your gun return forward after pulling it ? (gun empty of course !!!!)
If not, maybe you are just missing a spring.

loner5667,
Thanks for posting the exploded diagram !

We (my father in law and me) were looking at the diagram last night and he thought it might be the spring on the trigger (32 and 36 I think) that could be the problem.

My brother in law said when he took it apart he heard something "sproing" out and couldn't ever locate that piece or pieces.

I think we decided we were going to tear it down on wednesday to see what we find, but that info steve gave could help out a bunch, and the new diagram is easier to look at versus what I found...

Thanks,

I'll keep it up to date on what we find.

I DID IT!

We took it apart and out it back together according to the diagram, and it works. Test fired one shot and made sure that it ejected cartridges, which it does!

Now I just need to clean it and oil it up - I don't think it's been done for 20 some years....

My oldest is pretty excited about having a .22 to shoot now too!

Congrats on a successful resurrection!!!! Now just try to keep yourself out of the pawns looking for the next little 22 rifle to make work right so you and your oldest ‘both’ have a 22 to shoot. :D

True true...but, I have another boy fast approaching .22 ownership age and so he'll need one too - what to do, what to do....hahahaha

Man now I want to spend my lunch hours checking local pawns...hahaha

L'attente,

I don't have any children of my own, but I have a nephew that will be turning 8 the end of this year. About 2 years ago I started looking for a 'first' 22 for him because I knew my brother-in-law wouldn't.

I wanted him to have a 'boys' rifle, not a new one, but like you would have found 60-70+ years ago. First one I found was a Winchester 1890 in 22 short, then a Remington model 6, then a Winchester 1904, then a Stevens model 26 'crackshot'....You get the picture.

40+ old walnut and steel 22 rifles later....

Someday he'll end up with all of them, but for now, I just can't bring myself to let them go....

hahahaha, great....

Yeah this rem 511 was my father in laws first rifle from when he was a kid so it's a solid 50 years old or more. We just started really getting into guns this year and there was talk of getting a cricket for my oldest (9 yr, he'll be 10 by march) for Christmas and so I think my father in law wanted to pass it down to make another first rifle out of it...he's a great guy

I spent about an hour cleaning it last night with my boy, trying to explain to him how I get into this zen place when I'm cleaning...hahaha

After this weekend (camping and shooting) I'm going to have my boy clean it and get completely comfortable with it (need to do that with my wife too, I told her she's gonna clean the handgun).

Good work !

Welcome to THR, it is a great place to learn.

Have fun and be safe,

-steve
