I was talking to a gun friend of mine the other day and we were stuck on weather the 1911 has a different frame for the 9mm/38 super cals? I know you have to use a different extractor for the 9mm/38 VS 40/45 cals, but I believe a 1911 frame is a 1911 frame reguardless of what caliber you build it to be. What say yall:confused:

1911 Frame size

Sooooo......

for the most part they are the same but some will vary:confused:

Which, due to the wealth of manufacturers of 1911's can be said about the .45 frames too.

FWIW, the ones I've handled (Kimber and Armscor) were identical between 9mm/.38 super and .45. The deferences were all in add-ons and top ends.

There are several differences between 9mm/38 Super and 45 ACP frames.

Based on my recent bad experience, I suspect that's a good question to ask a gunsmith before commissioning them. If they say the frames are all the same, pass.

I had asked and was given the wrong answer. At the time, I did not know enough to realize what that implied about that firm's gunsmithing knowledge.

The good ones I spoke with to repair my DOA 1911 10mm immediately discussed measures to modify the 45 frame without me asking.

You may be able to get a response on-line. Bob Rodgers of Rodgers Pistolsmithing has been very generous, providing great information.

http://forums.1911forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18 is a gunsmithing forum he frequents.

I read almost all his posts before approaching smiths to fix my DOA 1911.

More questions

So where does one buy a 1911 frame for a 9mm build? you see 45 1911 frames all over the place but no 9mm/38 super frames.

Springfield makes 9mm/38 Super forged frames, but hard to find.

Consider Caspian. They sell 9mm/38 Super frames. http://www.caspianarms.com/

If you already have a 1911 .45 ACP frame, you can have it milled for a ramped 9mm barrel for about $100.

Caspian, MidwayUSA http://www.midwayusa.com/ or Brownells http://www.brownells.com/ sells books, tools and goodies you want for your project.

I suggest you read a bit and take Internet advise with a grain of salt. Little things are different, e.g. slide stops.

Good luck. Sounds like fun.

smee,

If you want to build, instead of buy, a 9mm 1911, look to the IPSC/USPSA race gun manufacturers.

Caspian, STI, SVI, etc. I don't know them all.

I'd say that the USPSA community has the lock on 9mm 1911 info. since the 9mm variants are used in competition there.

Thanks,

Thanks all for the great info, now to do some more research and reading before shelling out any money.
