It seemed a little condescending to me, that she thought the man's son would be less interested in firearms if he were to attend college. Does she assume college grads don't own guns?

good point. that bugged me a bit too. at the same time, it did seem like the kid could benefit from someone fostering some more interests in him besides guns and x-box. maybe she shouldv'e taken him somewhere to meet girls.

I'm all for someone fostering some more interests besides guns and video games, but she was a 30-something year old "hip-hop" aerobics instructor...Maybe a little less preaching to the kid about college and a little more going to college for her may be in order?

I'm all for college(graduate next semester), but it did seem a bit hypocritical.

Molon Labe, why don't you invite ol' Ken to TheHighRoad?:)

That's a bit excessive don't you think? I didn't feel he was "trailer trash" at all.

Um, that's because he wasn't...What, because he didn't have a giant 3-story house and he didn't go to college makes him trash? I think not.

Like I said on the first page, I just wish he would have had some better arguments ready. I thought he was very well spoken though.

Man, whenever they went to the fun shoot and she was talking about how dangerous it was and how uncomfortable she felt, I couldn't help but thinking to myself, "DANGEROUS? I couldn't think of somewhere I'd feel more safe!" :)

So, the guy being heavily tattooed, sportin' a goatee, and wearing sleeveless Larry the Cable Guy "Git-R-Dun!" type shirts all while living in a pre-fab home and not wanting his kid to go to college didn't do it for ya?

I will give you that he was well spoken and didn't talk like a bubba, but maybe YOU don't see that as "trailer trash/redneck", but that's EXACTLY how the media and much of the public portrays gun owners. Why didn't they pick a well educated guy like me who dresses nicely every day and lives in a $500k home in the liberal bastion of Connecticut instead of what amounted to a stereotypical redneck living in a trailer in the sticks? Some SERIOUS media spin goin' on there.

Did a search on her and found a Boston Herald article published yesterday:

http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/television/general/view/2008_06_30_Brockton_anti-gun_activist_under_fire_on_FX_s_%E2%80%9830_Days_

...“There was a Dayton Daily News article on me and I got compared to Hitler. Twice,” Lalli said about the local reaction to her views.

“Two people commented because I said the only people that should have guns are police and military, and they said that Hitler felt the same way.”

...Pulling a trigger for the first time proved to be more emotionally draining than Lalli had expected.

“That was my second day there. I wasn’t thinking about shooting. I was ready to cry anyway. I think I was more crying about what the heck had I gotten myself into (than shooting the gun),” Lalli said.

...“The conceal and carry license only requires 12 hours of instruction. For me to teach pilates (I need) 200 hours of classes,” said Lalli, owner of Hip-Hop Fun Shop in Brockton.

Due to time constraints, Lalli said she was given a BB gun to carry, though she was not told that at the time.

Despite their differences on gun control, Lalli said her experience with Ekermeyer and his son was a positive one.

“He’s a law-abiding gun (enthusiast) who owns a gun, several guns. If it’s against the law, he won’t do it. He’s not the person I need to worry about,” she said.

She should have given the kid some me luv u long time "here's to you Mrs. Robinson" type training. He's old enough to know what's goin' on down there.

Yes, he did tell her it was a BB gun because she didn't have her Ohio CCW permit and couldn't legally carry a real one. He told her before she even put the holster on in his house.

I thought she was interesting. My perception of antis has always been evil, lying, conniving gun grabbers. Still think that of the *holes that run the anti organizations. They have no problem lying & then looking themselves in the mirror in the morning. She just seemed like she was completely uninformed in the beginning, the antis fed her their BS, and she bought into it. By the end of her 30 days, I think she was beginning to see the light ( maybe ).

The trailer trash gun owner

Judging a book by it's cover can be a big mistake. He apparently owns enough property to step outside his front door and start popping off rounds. Wish I had that.

Ya can't really tell from a 1 hour TV show, but from what I did see, I think he'd make a pretty good neighbor.

starting off with a 12G? seriously

I would have bet my right and left arms that it was a 20 gauge, but even if it was, still a bad idea.

When she started crying and leaning against the shotgun's butt, all I could think of was "Poor gun, she's ruining the muzzle!" :cuss:. The guy standing behind her staring at the gun was probably thinking the same thing.

The trailer trash gun owner

He seemed like a pretty decent father figure, he may not live the lifestyle of the rich and famous but he seemed to be quite content with what he had. He seemed level headed and respectful of others, he also seemed to have a good relationship with his son, hardly trailer trash IMHO.

Better wipe down the entire bore with WD40 or something like that afterwards. LOL

In the piece about concealed carry on campus, to paraphrase: "What if the police come in and they don't know which shooter is the bad guy?" I really wanted someone to respond "What if the police don't come in? Then what? I guess there will just be more victims."

I hated that she referred to every black rifle (and a .50 cal bolt action) as a "machine gun" with no correction. Between the guy saying his m4 was the same as those used in Iraq (except his barrel is 1 1/2" longer and not select-fire) and the clip of folks on the range firing full-auto, I'm sure a lot of people think that all black rifles are "machine guns." I really wish they would have clarified the difference between a semi-auto military style rifle versus a true select-fire assault rifle.

Overall, though, it was a much better show than I was expecting. Aside from the mis-speak about his m4, the guy seemed knowledgable, safe and friendly. I was afraid they would find some guy who guzzled a six pack and went out to shoot road signs. I felt it was a balanced presentation with a strong pro-gun message in the end.

some comments from me

First, I can't believe how many people have called this gentleman "trailer trash". All of you who did should be ashamed of yourselves. He may not be a rich man, but his son was well fed, in decent clothes and all in all a well behaved and polite kid. Here in South East Va, we have quite a bit of trash, of the ghetto, barrio and trailer variety, and this man didn't fit that label at all. Second, It is virtually impossible to completely change a persons mind about a strongly held view, and she didn't change her mind completely, but she is now more likely to listen to different view then her own. Remember folks, its the willingness to listen to all sides of an argument before making up ones mind that is the true sign of wisdom. Third, I recently read an article, and I can't remember where, that had a breakdown on "known Gun Ownership" in the US. The % of gun owners w/ College degrees was noticeably smaller than the number without any "higher education". I can't find the article, but it seems to me it was something like 2 to 1. Forth, there have been a lot of comments about the first weapon they got her to fire being a 12 gauge shotgun. The first time I ever saw a firearm fired, it was my grandfather w/ a Ithica model 37 goose gun. He shredded a pumpkin from about 20yds, to demonstrate to my little 7y/o brain just how dangerous a gun can be. I have never forgotten the example. if I was in a position to do it myself, I'd start every shooting lesson I give the same way. About 5 years ago, I took a female friend of mine shooting for the first time. I started her w/ a .32 semi auto because it was the smallest caliber I own. She did Ok, save a little Hammer bite, but when I moved her up to .38speacial, and 9mm, they both had too much recoil for her to fire comfortably, and we soon cut the lesson short. She did have fun, but the recoil made her uncomfortable as a new shooter. So the next time we went, I started her w/ one round, then one magazine of five rounds of .45acp without telling her that it was a much larger caliber. After she got somewhat comfortable w/ my 1911, I handed her the same Browning Hipower w/ which she had felt so uncomfortable. after she had fired a few magazines through the Hipower, I told her what I had done. She is now carrying a Kahr in .40s&w on a regular basis. I wonder if that was the same reason, that they started Pia w/ the scattergun. Again just my opinion.

They would probably be the person not shooting people hiding under desks.

Or they would throw their guns down and put their hands up, not shoot at police.

This made me angry too. Too bad the main guy wouldn't articulate pro-2nd Amendment stances better.

.

I was quite impressed with the show. It appears that the chick walked away with a more (albeit still anti) acceptable view of guns.

I do wish that they had found a THR member instead of the guy they chose. I also wish they would have started her out on a .22 instead of a light, hard-kicking 12ga!!!

I think one of us would have had better rebuttals.

"4 people killed today" gets a response of "Let's go find out what the substitution effect is. Hey look, Jamaica has complete gun control. Wonder what kind of crimes they have..."

"We need stronger gun laws" gets a response of "Here's the CDC's gun study of pretty much every gun control law ever passed. They can't find a single gun law that ever reduced crime."

etc., etc.

Pretty decent show imo.

A fine example of how ignorance and conditioning can lead one toward a course of action and a stance on a subject matter.

This gal formed an opinion of a TOOL, ie, a firearm, based on ignorance due to the fact that she was NOT exposed to anyone using firearms for anything other than criminal activity. No hunting, no competitive shooting, nor for defense from criminal activity. She is / was completely ignorant of how the OVERWHELMING majority of citizens legally use firearms.

She was conditioned over the years to view the TOOL in a negative light based on how these TOOLS were ILLEGALLY used by PEOPLE. Somehow she was conditioned to associate the TOOL in a negative light and NOT the USER of the TOOL.

This show gave her an opportunity to shed some of the ignorance and allowed her to chip away at the conditioning she has experienced over the years. It is an example of how education and logic can be used to provide an individual with a sounder course of action and position on any subject.

Props to the lady and her gentleman host, and to the producers of the show who put out a program that was relatively unbiased.

Does anyone dispute the "statistic" they they stated on the show.. that 50% of all guns sold to bad guys are sold from licensed dealers(it came across as the dealer know inly selling his stuff to bad guys, knowing they were going to use them for evil).

Nowhere in their reasoning did stolen guns play a part..

m-4 same gun the military uses..........um yeah minus the full auto
Actually it could have been a full-auto...if you watched the part where they have all the people on the firing line shooting different guns, I'm 100% positive I heard full-auto fire there. Plus, judging by the suppressors and .50cal shown in that same part, it shows that those people are by no means "trailer trash"...they have money and have the goods to show for it...

I watched it last night. I was expecting them to portray the gun owner(s) as lunatics and the anti-gunner a humane, civilized person. To my surprise it was not like this. I was pissed a few times, and at the end i was happy to see her opinion and view change.

What amazes me is they took a person from the slums of the most liberal state and put her with what the elitists would consider a bitter gun clinger.
