I was on vacation in San Diego, (and on my birthday) some creeps broke into my house and stole a small fireproof document safe (bunch of documents and a watch). Good news is everything of any value including all my guns, wife’s jewelry etc, safe in the great big gun safe. They didn't even touch it (didn't even spin the dial). I always wondered what kind of deterrence a gun safe is, and now I know. First year after purchasing this safe and it's paid for it's self!!!!!!

be warned, they likely took down all the info on your safe and will be back.

Time to examine the weak points of your home security system and shore them up accordingly.

Glad to hear the safe is ok. Keep in mind that they now know you have one, and may wait for an opportunity to come again.

edit-- Heh! highorder and I posted the same thing at the same time. ;)

what you should do is when you go some place leave a light hooked up to a timer so it goes on and off at certain times they can be bought at any hardware store

Yeah, it crossed my mind, but a few things they did made me think they were complete muppets. Probably just some local kids (there's been a big spike in breakins since school got out). One example is they tryed to use an old credit card in the doc safe at the Mcdonalds right down the street. I doubt safe cracking career criminals are silly enough to try to purchase burgers a block from the house they just robbed and then try to return for the safe they have no tools to break to... that said, I guess it's possible.

Two questions:
1) How'd they get in.
2) What gave it away that you weren't home?

1)Window forced open.
2)I made no attempt to appear at home.

I probably should get a timer like suggested, I know as a child my parents always used them when we were away...

As long as the document safe contents will NOT open you up to ID theft, I guess you made out OK.

Yeah, the contents most certainly would. I actually just got all the contents back from a jogger who found them in the middle of nowhere. I've already contacted crediters and I'm going to subscribe to Life lock or a similar service...

Now, aren't you glad you popped for safe???

Glad they didn't get too much of your stuff.

It's too bad we didnt get to end some nasty creeper when we cleared it. j/k. Glad all is well in the big safe. Next time you're gone I'll go over every day and make myself a sandwich.
And play some cs...
j/k

Yeah no kidding. At the time, I could have bought another Glock or something stupid, but went w/ a safe, and you better belive I'm glad...

Quite often info about you being gone is relayed by someone who you see from time to time in your neighborhood (i.e. a neighbor). They know your patterns and or are lucky enough to notice when you are walking out the door with a bunch of suitcases and freshly combed hair after a pre-flight shower. They know if you live alone and or have family members who are going with you.

Or someone you told about your trip told someone else who happens to know where you live. Any number of things. Best bet is to do all the timer stuff with the lights AND the TV...my personal favorite is a radio set to an all-talk radio news station which is near the door and turned up just enough to where it sounds like someone is talking inside. It's not so high as to be obvious of its source, nor its intent. You can't quite make out exactly what it is and is only somewhat obvious if you put your ear right up to the door.

Oh, and don't tell anybody who doesn't have to know that you are going on a trip. If you are gone for a while, have a trusty neighbor grab your mail and newspapers (DO NOT suspend your subscription for a short period of time), and last, but not least have them throw a bunch of their garbage in your cans and recycling in your bins and have them roll it out and back in on the appropriate days. Mailmen, newspaper deliverers, and especially garbage men are good sources of information for thieves as to who is on vacation.

"be warned, they likely took down all the info on your safe and will be back".

+1 to that! Take the appropriate security measures. Be advised next time they may try a home invasion. I hope not! Be safe.

Eyesac, I am sure the police are checking but would McDonalds have a video of the guy?

I'm sure, but I'll be honest.. I doubt the police are pulling a tape from McDs. They wouldn't even come out to the house to dust for prints (Bastards). I suppose I could go down there and ask McD for a copy, but I'm not the guy who can put pieces of the puzzle together, the cops are. Same guys could have robbed the place 4 houses down from mine and I'd never know, that's what the cops are for (again, bastards).

Maybe its time to invest in a 'home camera system' yourself, some are only a few hundred dollars...with a couple of sims that look out and has a blinking LED.Glad you have the guns safe and sound...be on a 2nd lookout...crimes like this are increasing in both Northern and Southern Nevada.

Hard earned tax dollars being put to good use!

Was this the cop you called?

Eyesac, I suggest you pm CB900F and a1abdj, both are locksmiths and specialize in safes as well. They should be able to point you in the direction of where you should look as well as how to make sure your safe is secured as best it can to make the most of it. They can also tell you if what you have is suitable for the contents. I'm glad your guns are safe, but you need to be mindful of a second attempt.

You should be pressing the police to pull the CCTV tapes from McDonalds. It is their job to solve crimes and prevent future ones. It would take 5 minutes to match up the time when the card was used to the footage on the tapes and probably get a nice picture of whoever is using the card.

If someone broke into my house and then went to the fast food joint down the street I would be livid if the police refused to look at the CCTV footage. without that footage the perps will most likely never be caught unless they confess.
It is ridiculous that your local police seemingly do not even care at all that your house was broken into.

Most safes in residential burglaries are not touched, unless they are easily carried away. The one that they did carry away was obviously opened in very short order with the non valuable items dumped.

My biggest concern would be that they would come back for the larger safe. Obviously you have so much money that you need a large safe, and non of it was in the small one. I would not only beef up security a bit, but I would also be a lot more observant. The last thing you want is for one of them to be waiting for you to come home so they can point a gun to your head and make you open the other safe.

Chances are low that this situation would play out, but the likelyhood is much greater now that they know there's valuables that they had to leave behind.
