Need some California info please. Brother in Law is moving to California for a new job. He has a Glock .40 he wants to take with him and wants to know what needs to be done to stay clear of California's draconian laws. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

He can take the Glock, but must register it within 60 days (there's a $19 fee). He can not take the magazines; IIRC it is a felony to take into the state any magazine that accepts more than 10 rounds.

For transport, the gun should be unloaded and in a locked case. BTW, I wouldn't recommend trying to carry in public...

ok, whom does he contact for this registration and what is required to do so. Also, can he ship the firearm to himself(moving company)? Or does he have to transport it personally? Thanks again for the help.

He can pick up the forms at any California DMV office OR he can go to the California Attorney General's website, and get this form: click me for the form.

He'd only need to register the handguns. He's going to have to leave any magazines with >10 round capacity behind. Same with rifle magazines. The Assault Weapon Guide that is also on that site is not quite accurate. Only specific AR's and specific AK's are named as Assault Weapons. "Series" stuff is not legal. He can't have any "evil" features on his rifles or pistols either.

He can transport his firearms himself, if he wishes or if he knows where he'll be, he can ship them to himself.

Handguns should be locked inside their own case, magazines should be outside that case. They don't have to be, but they should for maximum safety against being hassled by law enforcement. Long guns do not have to be in their own case, but again, should be in their own locked cases or in a locked trunk.

Some websites do advocate open carry of unloaded weapons while in a vehicle... don't do it. Yet. It's best to just get here safely with as few hassles as possible.

calguns.net has all the info you need

- bringing firearms when you move (and what is in demand in California)
- ins and outs of California's insane laws
- how to own an AR-15 that is Cali legal
- some info on Open Carry in California
- discussions on lawsuits and activism

Also check out californiaconcealedcarry.com and californiaCCW.org

There is no California Open Carry sight that I know of, OpenCarry.org has coverage though.....

Welcome to the Golden State!

Everything you need to know is on the CA DOJ website.
ONLY if you already know exactly what you are looking for, and if DOJ has deigned to address it.

For example, one will seek in vain for assistance in building an Off List Lower, as DOJ still has not accepted the result of Herrot on its web site.
