The following is a HYPOTHETICAL question only. This is for discussion purposes ONLY!

Getting bored while stuck in traffic I got wondering is it legal (Forget practicality, desireability, and any other rational questions) to mount firearms inside a vehicle aimed to fire outside the vehicle?

I realize that this would vary from state to state, assume that the person owning/driving the vehicle has a CCW or equivalent from their state and that the weapon can be fired by the driver.

Anybody know of any laws for or against vehicular mounted weapons in specific states?

Again this is a HYPOTHETICAL question only

I don't know the laws, but I know there are at least a few machine guns mounted on high end luxury vehicles in private hands in the US. Don't know where, or how many millions it cost.:uhoh:

i wonder what the ford dealer markup would be for a gun turret

probably illegal if visable atleast here in nc due to the law that says it is illegal to brandish a firearm with the intent to scare the public of sumthing along those lines

Planning on building a Batmobile?

Not until I get a few billion like Bruce Wayne :neener:

Like I said I was bored and this is a hypothetical discussion only.

I've wondered this myself. If open carry is legal in your area, what's to stop you from mounting a turret or three on your vehicle?

Traveled in a Mercedes in the Middle East with some sort of machine pistol set into the door trim. Not set up to fire through the car since the car was armored but very readily available!!!

watch any james bond movie.

Not only is it possible to mount guns but you can also get rocket launchers, coffee makers and a nice little door that deploys tire popping tacks.

i guess it´s a discussion wether a well prepared militia needs
Vehicle borne support fire or if that is already army responsibility.

i vote army, and i wouldnt want to see the
road-rage news if people had Saiga12s mounted
on their cars.......

..you gotta admit there´s a difference between
getting out of the car walking up to the other driver
and "putting caps in his a**" and having a Saiga12 Trigger
right next to your horn... just in case you think
honking the horn is not an adequate form of response
to his misbehavioural driving?

come on, smell the coffee.....

Tools are tools. People are people. Actions are actions. Do not confuse them. The practicality of vehicle mounted weapons aside, the argument that they would make drivers more rageful and murderous is just as nonsensical when read on THR as it is when read on the Brady site. Hunks of metal, rubber, and plastic do not have some magical effect over a person's actions. The person is in control. Not the piece of machinery. You are projecting emotions on to an object incapable of them. In the end, without a person and their own thoughts and emotions at the helm, a gun of any kind is nothing more than a heavy silent object.

Duct tape a glock to your side mirror and let us know what happens with your next traffic violation.

Yeah, even worse than those CCW nuts make things now!

Not the same. Wasn't everybody whining in the other post that a mounted weapon is offensive and overly powerful which is why the police didn't need it?

@ Taurus...

it´s nice to have a philosophical conversation at Nietzsche´s coffeetable
about citizenship and freedom,
BUT you do realize we are speaking about car mounted guns.

Accidental discharge would actually find it´s original source, eh?

The idea of a mounted weapon on a vehicle is completely outside the scope of what civilians and law enforcement need. Military is different of course. If we ever needed vehicle mounted weapons for personal protection/survival then this country is in some pretty dire straits. Though I'll admit it would be cool. Some states may technically allow it, but I would bet that you would be very quickly arrested regardless.

road-rage

I don't see much of an issue of a vehicle mounted weapon causing anymore harm then open carry (unless the darn thing was pointed at me!). People are responsible for their actions, and I actually believe that carry makes people generally more responsible. When people exercise their right to carry they tend to think about their actions more, resulting in more reasonable reactions. Flying off the handle with a horn or words doesn't have any meaningful repercussions (usually). Doing so with a weapon would.

I may be wrong, which tends to happen a bit, but I am under the impression that it is a federal offense to fire a weapon from a vehicle in any configuration... as far as private citizens are concerned.

Having them loaded and ready to go is a different story mind you. I know here in SD it's legal to have loaded rifles in vehicles.

Having said that... it would be interesting to see the combinations and configurations that are contrived. I can picture a geo metro with a rotating auto-turret on the roof.

Well, that would depend on your level of power/influence I suppose.

If Joe Bluecollar decided to do something like that I'm willing to bet that laws/regulations -could be found- (or made up quickly) to force him to undo his work.

On the other hand if you are rich/famous/government then I'm betting that you could get away with it.
