OK Its been a while since I've been on here, school + football practice, and I'm still looking for a rifle parents are getting closer to a yes so almost there.

Here's the question I have decided I want a .308 caliber rifle. The problem is I want one with a Detachable Magazine. i know what you are going to say get a M1A, its to expensive plus I want a bolt. So i found the remington 700 sps dm which seems to be perfect but its not chambered in .308 so is a gun smith able to change it out so it can? Also would an m1a magizine fit in there b/c I would want one with a larger mag.

Any help would be apretiated and I am young and still lost when it comes to all this stuff and dad ain't to big into guns so please help!!!!!

Zach

This company can make what you want, using HS Precision stocks and magazines.

It sounds like you want the "Ultimate Prairie 700". This is offered in .308, has the HS Precision stock and, therfore, can take HS Precision 10 round magazines.

If you do some research on the 700 and magazine conversions, there are a lot of horror stories. HS Precision gave up and made their own bottom metal to get reliable feed with high capacity magazines. Also, they made their own magazines. ($120 each for the 10 rounders.)

This stuff isn't cheap.

However, someone did this with a Ruger M77 in .308 for a whole lot less money. Check this out -

However, while it is an interesting modification, it isn't really a detachable magazine (the trigger guard has to be removed to remove mag), it is more of a really large fixed box magazine that hangs under the rifle. Which doesn't have a guide for stripper clips.

So, it depends what you are trying to accomplish.

are you stuck on the remmy, and do you want it to be more tacticool, as opposed to a hunting looking rifle? You could try to find a military style cz, in 550 or 750, and these would be exceptional, and around 1000 bucks. You could also look at a savage in 308, then change out your stock, for tacticoolness, and proly do the whole rig, minus the glass, for 700 bucks or less.

I want it to use the gun for hunting and also if the time ever comes b/c of the way the country is going somthing to lay some rounds down without having to reload every 3 shots. I'll have about 800 minus glass to spend on a rifle

rifle

get a Savage: they are very accurate and the price is good.they have models with detachable mags.
forget about the guerrilla wars it ain't going to happen.we have gone thru this stuff before and it staightens out.I should know I am 84.

my question still stands though can it be done or no i'm talking crazy I kinda like the idea of the ruger but would like it to be detachable

Thanks
Zach

Sounds to me like you really should get a remington model 750 or a remington model 7600. The 750 is a semi auto, and the 7600 is a pump action.

Check this out:

http://www.combathunting.com/Products-REMINGTON_7600.html

A good friend of mine had a 7600 carbine in 30-06 with a couple of high cap detatchable mags for it. It seems like he said those same mags would work on the semi auto rifle too. I don't know who makes the mags.

Here is another thing. What range are you looking to shoot this rifle at, what is your budget, how often will you be shooting it, and how much weight are you willing to lug around?

I would stay away from Badger Ordinance. Their stuff is waaay to overpriced, and some of their stuff has been spotty in terms of machine work. What you could do is either get a Savage or a Remington. Both in my opinion, are the better of the bolt actions these days. Savages are the best bang for the buck.

Here is a DBM system for ther Remington long/short actions. I have one installed on my 30-06 tactical rifle and it works very good and it is not very pricey. It will require SOME maching by a gunsmith, or will require some modification to the magazine lips so it will not be overly stiff in chambering a round, and it will also need to be inletted. Lot of options out there. Choose wisely.

Here is the DBM I was talking about.

What's the budget here? Once you start talking about rebarreling, you're looking at expense of both barrel & gunsmith. I think it'd be a lot better idea just to get a .308 from the get-go. Look at CZ and Savage. Also, there are surely some used Remingtons in .308, if you have to have a Remington. If you can handle a pump instead of an turnbolt, then the Rem 6615 police carbine comes in both .223 and .308.

DBM

I'm curious about this, so I've been doing some reading. The DBM mentioned above isn't available for .308 and other short actions. At least, not that I can find. Works for .30-06 and similar length cartridges (.270, etc.)

The .30-06 is a fine cartridge, very similar to the .308 (As I understand the history of things, the .308 was developed to achieve the performance of the original .30-06, but in a shorter case.)

If you aren't the Army and worried about NATO common chambering, you might consider a 700 in .30-06. Then you could do the DBM conversion and have the look you want.

Not to mention that M2AP ammo is still available, as well as a host of great loads from 125 to 250 grain pills...

Fixed it if you were having trouble reading it like i was.

my budget is around 800 minus the glass

weight is of no issue

would be shooting from 50-300yrds.

can some one tell me what models from cz and savage offer a dm

Thanks

Zach

All the cz models in 308 have dm. It is the other calibers that are fixed. You also could buy a rem heavy barrel model and add a badger ordnance detachable 10 rnd mag.

+1 on the Badger Ordnance bottom metal. This will be my next project rifle, sometime next year, after the housing market starts to turn around. I have not done any close inspection of the BO metal or mags, but from the pics on their site, I think that it MAY BE possible to modify an M1A/14 mag to work with the mag well. Looking at the H-S product, it looks like , if it's even possible, there would be a lot more work involved. But like I said, I've had no hands-on look at either piece of hardware, these observations only come from inspection of website pictures.

I looked at a cz550 varmit kevlar said 925 for it which is over my budget any other suggestions. I would like to buy new.

thanks so far guys

Considering that you want to buy new:

.308 (7.62x51)
10 rounds or greater detachable magazine
cheap (<$800)

Pick any 2

mybe I phrased it wrong I want to be able to put a bigger mag. in it it does not have to come with it just the ability to do so

If you want really hi-cap mags, a DPMS LR-308 is the the only thing other than converting old M14 mags. At least to the best of my knowledge. Have fun picking!:D
