Im Considerin a Romainian AK

I have owned 2. One sar1, and a wasr10. The sar1 was great no problems at all, but like a fool I sold it years ago for extra funds to get an AR.

The wasr on the other hand was a pos. It had a very badly canted front sight, and the mag well was so over dremeled, that even just walking around would make a ton of noise from the mag wobbling around.

If you can find a sar1 get that. If all you can find is a wasr give it a good look over before you buy it. I should have done that when I recieved my wasr, but you live you learn.

Now I just have a yugo ak, and couldn't be happier.

I highly recomend the aes 10b its a great rifle for a great price. Although i had to swap out the crappy century fcg for the tapco g2.

From what I hear they are often functional and sometimes very accurate, but you can't count on either 100%.

I have a WASR 2 in 5.45. The mag wobbled so much it wouldn't feed right. I eventually found the polymer bulgarian mags were wider than the supplied bakelight mag and fit it better. Also, the action is rough and sounds like it is full of gravel when it cycles. However, it does work reliably and it was firing accurately last time I had it out. I need to get it cleaned up and take it out again sometime soon I guess.

I got a WASR-10 in early 2007. It wouldn't take drums so I had the mag well widened. Other than that no canted sights or any other problems. It runs like a champ.

A friend of mine bought a wasr-10 for $450 at a local shop. It doesn't like to release the magazine which is not very handy, but probably just needs the release to be dremeled.

WASR:barf:

For just a few $$ more, look into a Yugo, basic Saiga conversion or as mentioned above a good condition used SAR-1.

If you decide on the WASR, do as suggested earlier and look it over good checking for croked sights, gas block, etc..

I own a wasr-10 and haven't had any problems at all with it. Mag wobble is minimal and nothing is canted, as long as you check for those you should be fine. It is great to shoot and accurate enough for me.

I have a CAI imported WASR-10. At first I had mag release issues. With a little bit of dremel work it is great and runs like a champ. I've never had a feed or fail to fire issue. It eats a steady diet of Wolf ammo. I paid $279 for it a few years ago.

Romanian AKs tend to be more crudely made than Russian, Bulgarian, or Polish rifles. That said, if assembled correctly they still run like AKs.

The 'assembled correctly' can be a big if. Make sure whoever your buying from has a good return policy so you're not hosed if the rifle doesn't function. BSW

I have a SAR-1. Both my oldest son and I love it. The only trouble with any AK type rifle could be trigger slap or trigger rebound. If your trigger finger feels funny after shooting your AK rifle or SAR, all you need to do is replace some small parts in the trigger assembly. You can get replacement parts from Red Star Arms or K-var Corporation for a small price. It's a minor problem that is easily fixed. I've had my SAR-1 for about 10 to 12 years now.

I bought one from AIM last month. It doesn't have any functional problems whatsoever (not even mag wobble).

The TAPCO G2 trigger group is also reportedly quite good.
It is - nice short pull, no slap.

Wasr= POS (I have handled them they look like a chimp smashed them around and a 5 year old built it)
Yugo=Well made AK rifle worth the extra $100 since I bought a Yugo M70AB2
I have not handled any other type of AK's so I will not go any further.

Let me see.
For Romie AK types,i've owned:
2 SAR-1's
2 SAR-2's
2 SAR-3's
2 AES10B's
1 PSL
1 WASR 22

All have ran 100%,also without canted sights.
Now the wood might not have been the "sweetest" on a few.
The metal on a few almost made them look "used",when NIB.
ALL in all, they are good weapons for the money.
That all said,if I was shopping today for a Romie, with funds in
my pocket, i'd add another AES10B to the collection long before a WASR 10.
Now,if you wanted to the BEST bang for the buck, GO SAIGA !!!!!
My S-12,S-410,S-308,S-7.62 are all hands down better then any Romie.

do the siagas use AK mags

and are yall talkin about the saiga that i posted in post #13

Yes,that one will do fine!! ;)

You do need to spend a little time to do the conversion, and add @ $80
for the needed parts. If you want it to go bang it will. If your looking
for a true AK "look alike",it takes more money and more time to convert.

Just to move the fire control group and add a pistol grip and butt stock
is about an hours work,if you want the front handguards done, it will add
more money to the build.

If you just want 30 round mags in it,get the "sure-fire"(US made) mags and just change the gas piston or hammer out. That will give you the 4 parts needed to keep legal.

I've owned a WASR 10 for about 5 years now. It has been a great rifle, the sight isn't canted and the mags fit the mag well nice and tight.

It had a little trigger slap when i bought it but 20 min and a red star arms trigger group fixed that.

It is also very accurate for an AK. 4-5 inch groups are not uncommon.

. . . but have you owned one? Basing performance on looks - I'm glad we don't do it in the workaday world.

I bought a WASR-10/63 UF and I love it.

If you get an Underfolder you might want to check out my post on wrapping your folder, your cheek will thank you.

Mine looks just like the one in the picture below.
