I saw a few police trade in S&W 9mm autos at a gun show today. They were stainless, high capacity 9mm autos with night sights and a rail attached under the dust cover. Ths serial numbers all began with "CSPD".

Does anyone know what the CSPD is?

How much are these worth?

Are you sure the CSPD was part of the serial? Sounds like a Police Department stamping (Coral Springs Police Department or whatever town it it really is) which is common on ex-cop guns.

Like I said, this gun was a police trade in, and CSPD was part of the serial number, followed by 4 numbers. The dealer had several and all the serial numbers started off CSPD.

I have no doubt CSPD is a polic department somewhere, and I am curious where.

Does anyone know of a police department that just divested itself of S&W 9mm hi cap autos with night sights and rail attachments?

Yes, obviously you are correct. It is a special run for the CSPD, with CSPD in the serial number. No question about that.

The question is, does anyone know what PD these guns belonged to?

Has any police department recently divested itself of these guns???

older model S&W 3rd Generation 9mms...

As I posted here before, unless you want the police model S&W for target use or collector value, I'd avoid buying it. Smith & Wesson no longer sells these models and it would be difficult to maintain if you shoot/carry it often...

I seriously doubt that ANY semi-auto S&W is so old that parts and service are no longer available.

I have never seen the department initials as part of the serial. Might be rather unusual.

Drop Roy $50 and he'll confirm the serial and tell you the city.

Cspd

CSPD is Colorado Springs Police Department and you are talking about a 5903 if memory serves me and I bought a 5903TSW from Summit gunbroker and it was a trade in from Gwinnett County PD and it shoots great.

Colorado Springs Police Dept. traded back into S&W almost all the 5906's about a year to year & a half ago & went to 9 m/m M&P Smiths. I'm sure S&W dumped these 5906's on the market.

There should be a number after the CSPD marking "CSPD-****".

That's what I was issued and carried. Information came from current CSPD officer as of 2:15 PM this date. When was the last time you delt with CSPD?

I'm betting its Colorado Springs Police Department.

Are you sure about that? the last time I dealt W/ CSPD the cop had a 5906
They are in the process of swapping out the 5906s for M&Ps. Some officers haven't made the switch yet.

I'd say about 80% of the CSPD I see are now packing M&Ps (I'm on the west side if that matters).

We had an issue with a former employee that required police attention and the officer that took our statement was packing a shiny new M&P ... this was about 3 months ago.

I talked to him about it and he LOVES the M&P and was thrilled to get rid of that heavy, crappy triggered 5906.

I always kind of liked the look of the 5906 but, the only S&W I ever owned ( Model 910 AKA a black 5906) wasn't all that accurate. Never really went back to S&W after I got rid of it.

So CSPD doesn't have the money to hire new officers but they can buy new guns? Your speeding ticket dollars at work.

Who's all around me Rondog?

I'm still thinking that the serial does NOT have CSPD as a prefix. I bet the number being mistaken for the serial is actually a department stamped number. Many agencies stamp their own numbers on issue weapons.

No, serial doesn't have CSPD as a prefix, they are marked on the right side above the rail with "CSPD" followed by a 4 digit number. They are 5906tsw. Smith and wesson DOES indeed still sell this model, and they still do have parts. They are excellent guns and a value around the 400 price i see them going for. The are also the decock only guns, which i also like.

It's interesting to see how far those guns have gone! I actually live in Gwinnett County, GA where those guns served as police duty weapons. I bought one myself from a local pawn shop. I'm taking it to the range tomorrow!

I have a 5906 with CSPD1138 written on R side(not stamped in the metal), which is NOT the serial#, which is on the L. I am almost certain it is from CO Springs PD. I picked it from a litter of 50. Best auto handgun I ever bought, only paid $400 in 2005. Will cycle any 9mm crap ammo you can find. ZERO jams after 1000's of rounds. 15 rd mags. It is a bit heavy and tiresome for 24/7 carry, but nice to have. I carry a kel-tec .380 24/7 and add the Smith when in dangerous areas. This is one I would never trade or sell. If you do buy one, check for excessive wear; some have 10's of thousands of rounds run through. VERY dependable and accurate.
