So I went to the dentist last week, thinking I had a cavity because one of my teeth was very sensitive to cold liquid, brushing, etc. :what:

Turned out that tooth, and the ones on either side of it, had lost some enamel and exposed some of the soft guts of the tooth which was causing the sensitivity. The dentist said that can happen over time, but strangely none of my other teeth have this problem.

Anyway, I went to the range later that evening with my Mosin-Nagant, got down into prone position, took aim and… I felt the stock press right up against those three teeth through my cheek! I was shocked. So basically the recoil of that rifle has been wearing out the enamel on those teeth all this time.

Does anyone else have this problem, or am I doing something wrong with my positioning behind the rifle?

I had a tooth fall apart when I was shooting my 50-90 sharps forthe first time. Turns out it has been cracked for some time prior though.

i'm not a rifle shooter but i do spend a lot of time with my shotgun. With that, if it is "slapping you in the face" then there is a fit problem. I'm no dentist either but I would suspect some other cause.

After shooting an automatic shotgun vs. a pump/over-under I have to say I do not like the punch to the cheek much. It is just not needed IMO even though I LOVE the look of an over-under.

:)

After shooting my .454 revolver, I can't tell you how many times I had to pick my teeth off the ground, but I don't mind, I'm picking up brass anyway.

Shooting a mosin you're lucky you still have teeth!!!

j/k, I love my mosin.

I wouldn't think that would be it since your cheek would be the thing rubbing against your teeth. Unless your mouth is as dry as sandpaper, I can't imagine that wearing away at your enamel. Tooth enamel is very hard stuff.

Guys who shoot NRA High Power Rifle shoot thousand of rounds per year through M1A's, and in the past M-1 Garands, they dont lose their teeth!!. Something else is causing your problem, the problem becomes more easily felt when you shoot, that's all.

308 and 3006 are light rounds try shooting something a but larger, and 7mm mag doesnt count.

thats probably the spot you like to put your lolli-pop or gum or chew? thats a common cause for most of us.

oh yeah, you WILL loose a tooth from shooting your gun if you happen to be carrying some hard candy in your mouth at time of shooting.
My father had a buddy who had that happen to him.

Mosins revenge

cheek weld snapped a crowned tooth clean off. dds soothed me by saying it was weak already and would have broke soon anyways. i rather think its part of a voodoo commie plot still in effect from the cold war.:scrutiny:

Shoulda used some Rem Oil for mouthwash. It works for me.

It's kind of a stretch to blame it all on shooting. It might have sealed the deal, but you could have just as easily done it by eating peanuts.

In Russia...

You shoot rifle, you lose tooth. When you die, man behind you has pick up rifle and tooth.

Man in back of line has most tooths.

I would look elsewhere for a cause. Either your gum is receding there or that tooth for whatever reason is backing out of the bone in the jaw. Do you have any missing teeth?

interesting. now I have a new excuse for the dentist while I'm telling him all those other lies about flossing and brushing 7 times a day and using that special $20/bottle mouthwash he told me about :neener:

"Yeah, doc, I've been brushing and flossing and washing just as you told me, but I got another mosin at the show last week...that must be the problem."

Are you sure you are not catching bullets in your teeth again? You were warned about doing that.

Not sure if the dental problem is related to the shooting--but I'm sure I'm staying out of Russia!

I have cracked a couple teeth, completely unrelated to shooting, for what that's worth. But now I look like this:

:D

Good luck with it.

Your shooting is not hurting your teeth--NO WAY-!
Your cheek is nery much softer than Teeth and The cheek protects your teeth --Now ==Do you have any trauma to your cheek??? Bleeding ?? Black and Blue ?? NO =Then your cheek is not being hurt and for sure the teeth inside are not eather.
Same thing with rtina detachment -If you can stand normal activity and your eyes are ok Shooting wont hurt you eather -That said If you have week retena attachment Shooting can cause you problems -But any other activity will cause problems also !

i doubt that shooting your rifle is the cause of the enamel breaking down. there is usually an ample supply of saliva in your mouth to act as a lubricant. it probably has to do with some other factor. which may include any of the following; age, diet, tobacco,vitimin/mineral deficiency(s), etc. my teeth are falling apart as well, the older you get, the more your body deteriorates. part of the natural decaying process i guess! lol! just go to wal-mart and buy a can of appliance epoxy paint, and a couple of small paint brushes. it is way tougher than enamel anyday! (you just have to have a sense of humor)!

My guess is conincidence and the reason you probably have problems on one side is because you probably use that side more. So more chance of wearing out faster.

You probably have wear on the sides of the teeth called abfractions. They are the result of various causes, the most common being bruxism, or tooth grinding. I would brush gently near those areas, use a sensitive toothpaste and possibly be fitted for an occlusal guard to wear at night, when most tooth grinding takes place. Talk to your tooth doc about it.

If you've been watching the political debates and/or the stock market, you may well be grinding your teeth non-stop, as well as banging your head against the wall.
