Question for residents of IL,LA,IN,OK,AL

Having spent a lot of time at both places, definitely go to Purdue over Illinois.

IL sucks, don't come here... trust me

As someone else said, Louisiana is a shall issue state in regards to CCW permits. We recognize lots of other states' permits too.
Also, here your car is considered an extension of your home. No permit needed to keep or carry a gun in your vehicle. It doesn't need to be unloaded or visible or any other silly stuff like that.
Open carry is legal here but some police agencies are more ... how shall I say... tolerant of the practice. There are some of us open carrying here in the Baton Rouge area but not many. I'd recomend a trip over to Opencarrydotorg and check out the Louisiana subforum there.

Yeah Indiana is probably the best bet off all those noted. Even though I am an IU guy (IU vs Purdue is one of the nation's foremost college rivalries), Purdue has one of the best Vet schools in the world.

We are a very gun friendly state, having recently even begun allowing deer hunting with some rifles (if you haven't lived here you might not be impressed by this fact but we're happy). Handgun licenses are easy to get at a resonable cost...but you will wait a couple of month maybe after application due to poor staffing levels.

Indiana hasn't yet come to grips with the college campus firearm thing yet. When I was in college in the 70s, there were several guys who had their shotguns and rifles in their dorm closets and nobody thought a thing about it. Guys would go squirrel hunting on the weekend or in the evening. Others just moved to college and brought their guns with them. That wouldn't fly now.

At any rate, gun ownership is highly regarded in Indiana.

If you are talking Indiana State, pass it up and go Purdue...Lafayette is a pretty good place to live. Terre Haute, (ISU), really has nothing to give, plus the cops are known to heckle anyone who open carries around town.

Avoid Illinois like the plague. It is even worse in Chicago, you basically can't own anything besides a deer rifle and even then you need to bend over and say AHHHHH and give DNA samples practically.

Cook County, which is Chicago and the surrounding area, has an AWB. No magazines over 10 rounds and every feature that could possibly look 'evil' is banned.

Illinois in general has the WORST gun laws in the nation. Thank Mayor Daley for losing his lawsuit against the gun industry.

The proper term is a long way from heaven and too darn close to Chicago.

Purdue has graduated some fine vets. Hopefully you are planning on large animal practice. (shameless plug) West Lafayette is a good place to live with reasonable rents and a low crime rate. There are very few persons with gun paranoia and many of the local farmers have private ranges set up and usually are generous letting others use them.

indian will issue a non res LTCH . but it you hav an off campus apartment you can get a resedent one.
state law is very silent on where you ca not carry..

If you might be going to Purdue, the Lafayette area is very shooter friendly..
we have 1 indoor range, 2 large out door clubs.. lots of trap clubs around area.
plenty of shooting events every weekend...

qwert65, I can't really contradict anything the people above say about Illinois . . .but if you do decide on ISU I can probably help you out with a place to shoot. (just shoot me a PM if you decide on ISU . .I'm about 10 miles north and have 3 kids attending ISU)

I'm not sure what type of hunting your looking for but around here deer hunting is probably the biggest thing and I could probably even help you find a stand to use . .but you'd be limited to shotguns. Good Luck on the DVM! (My niece just completed her DVM at Mississippi State)

I live in Illinois and went to school in Indiana and would certainly recommend the latter as regards shooting/firearms ownership. One of my professors at IU actually got me into competitive shooting - it's a solid state for gun owners.

If you do wind up in Illinois, don't despair. The laws are certainly onerous, but they don't prevent an active shooting culture. I've got everything from sporting clays to three gun matches within driving distance; and some of the best trainers in the country regularly visit IL for open-enrollment courses.

If I missed it in a previous post, sorry. In OK, you can keep your firearm in your car even if you are on campus; of course you will need a CCW. As for liquor establishments, you can carry in restaurants and liquor stores. Just not in a place that makes 51% of their sales in alcohol(on premises consumption) .Do you have one from your home state? I am a student at OSU, had a former brother-in-law who got his DVM here also. You will find that lots of students and faculty alike are firearms owners and enjoy hunting and fishing. Granted, there are some of the others that disagree with the gun ownership thing, but not too many. It is a great medium sized college town. Very rural around here. The gun range is about 10 miles or so from town and it is shared by the local PD. I think it is about $100 a yr. I could be wrong. Anyway if you decide to come this way, drop me a line.

Indiana and Alabama are both good locations if you like guns. Both states have few places where you can't carry a gun. I know you can LEGALLY carry inside universities and K-12 schools in Alabama with a license. That is very valuable. You could get canned from school, but at least know law broken. You can also carry when you go out to eat at restaurants that serve alcohol or shoot pool with friends at a local college bar and carry without breaking the law.

Oklahoma has good CCW laws. OSU is one of the best in the nation for DVM.

Down state Illinois may be ok. Stay clear of the Chicago land area.

There is a firearm ban in effect in the city of Chicago. However, there is also a shooting victim reported everyday in Chicago. DUH. But, of course, the governing fathers do know best!! :banghead:

Unless all these 5 schools are equivalent in reputation, quality of training and placement of their graduates, I cannot understand how each respective state's gun laws should matter.

I don't need to tell what's happening in economy and job market in general. You need to get the best training, you need to be as marketable as you can be, you do need to come out of the most reputable school that you can get into.

Look beyond one year of clinical training. When you are looking for your first job, you want to be in position to choose your desired place (that's where gun laws will matter). You want to be in position to command the best income, so you can afford those guns. Go to the best school; this is your priority now.

I worked/trained in Chicago for 9 years. It sucked gun-wise. But, as a result of that sacrifice, I have positioned myself in situation of good job security, nice income and ability to find a job in any corner of this country.

Think about it, and good luck with your career.
