PTR-91 Any good?

I can say that mine shoots great (18" target model). I have shot some surprising groups with the open sights at 100. I actually like it more than than the HK91, enough to sell the 91 I had. Thompson Center made the barrels and it has great accuracy, the internals in my ptr are Hk as far as i know from the markings. Money well spent in my opinion.

Short story - equal or better quality to HK91, much lower price.

A few of the parts on the PTR are original HK parts, but most are US-made. In case you don't know the story, it's US-made on original HK tooling from a plant in Portugal.

They're awesome. Well made, very reliable. They distance that they throw brass makes them deadly from two angles.

I really dig mine. Nothing bad to say about it except for the trigger pull. My lower is getting shipped to triggerwork.net soon.

It's a pretty good rifle. The stock furniture is a little bit cheap in my opinion but it is fully functional. The slimline forearm/handguard is just ugly and the buttstock feels and looks a little cheap. The trigger is lousy out of the box but apparently it can be fixed for around $100 from what I understand. Haven't gotten around to getting mine fixed yet. Quality of the metal parts that make up the core of the rifle is excellent in my opinion. If you swap out the forearm with a new wide style it looks like a proper HK91, a better stock is nice but the original one can be lived with. I originally fitted mine with a nice Leupold scope that worked quite well but the aluminum claw mount would occasionally get a bit loose and then I would have to tighten and re zero. Gave up and bought the Hensoldt Fero Z24 whatever sniper scope with the claw mount and am very happy with it. Steel claw mount clamps right on and is VERY solid.

Probably the best thing about the PTR is that it's 100% reliable. I shot about 500 rounds of South African surplus and some random other stuff through mine when it was new out of the box without any cleaning and it had no problems at all. No jams, no failures to feed, no problems at all, goes bang every time.

The second best thing is the accuracy. Trying to shoot itty bitty groups is boring and annoying in my opinion but I do like to shoot at the gong that my range has set up. It's about 6" in diameter and I can hit it every time until it is swinging so wildly that I can't quite time the shots well enough to hit it.

Third best thing is the price. Paid $900 for mine a while back and they can be easily found for under $1000 still. Mags are extremely cheap. Most I have paid is $10 for a steel mag. Cheapest I have paid is $3 a piece for used aluminum mags in great shape. Bought a bunch of older (but new in wrapper) aluminum mags for $5 apiece. Even AK magazines cost more and they are the epitome of cheap plentiful mags. Other 308 cal semi autos on the market cost a lot more.

Excellent rifles, super accuracy. My favorite 30 cal.

Get an AR lower either way.
