So, I finally completed my Savage precision rifle project a few weeks ago. It's not finished per se, but it's complete and I've been shooting it as is until I can afford more expensive toys! It is set up as follows:
-Savage 11 action
-Shilen .308 hand lapped SS barrel
-Bushnell Elite 3200 10x mil-dot scope
-EGW 20 MOA Picatinny Base
-Burris Rings-steel
-Factory Heavy Barrel Stock-bedded
-Oversized bolt handle
And my best load so far is:
-175 SMK-seated just off the lands
-43.5gr Varget
-Nosler Custom Brass
-CCI BR-2 primers
With this setup, I've been getting 10 round groups less than .75 MOA. Three and five round groups around .5 MOA and below are what I'd call normal. Even the worst loads I've made went 1 MOA or below. So, all in all, pretty darn good...but I think it can do better.
Perhaps a higher magnification scope would help and I know the factory stock is less than ideal. I don't have any really fancy reloading equipment...just using standard RCBS FL sizer set and Lee Collet Neck Sizer.
I plan on upgrading the scope (even though I love it to death), stock, add a bipod among a few other touches. So what would be the most logical next step in this project?
