North and South

I actually had a woman from NYC ask if my house was safe from indian attacks, she thought that we were still fighting cowboys and indians. DEE, DEE, DEEEEE

Then again I had a guy ask if I knew what the internet was and if we have running water, he was from Seattle, I live in Spokane, the second largest city in Washington.

It's an ignorance issue, not a gun issue, but the two go hand in hand a lot of times.

I happen to have had the great privilege of growing up in Wisconsin. It is an open carry, NO CCW state. I am an avid hunter and fisherman, so I grew up hunting and shooting with my friends and family. I then joined the Army, met my now, wife., and then moved to this messed up state, Georgia. The more and more I traveled around, the more and more I wanted a gun. I live just outside Atlanta. By far it is worse than Madison/Milwaukee. The way they run their local gov't and how things are done is completely bass akwards down here.

But, they are extremely liberal with their gun laws. I since picked up my concealed carry permit and a .357. I carry it everywhere I go. Wal-Mart, the drive in, everywhere. Everyday I read things about houses being broke into and people being shot for no reason. My wife thought it was a bad idea to have a gun until the other day when there was a stranger in our back lawn.

I believe that its more a state of mind or mentality thing than a north and south thing.

Dookie.

People ask me if it snows year round up there.
I tell them I tip cows for fun and my favorite food is a deep fried chunk of cheese that we call a curd.

mainebear, my wife is from the Bangor area, and she has a sister around Bucksport. Beautiful country up there.

Are you up in "the county", as my wife would probably say?

I'm a native North Carolinian, but I swear Maine reminds me of western NC, in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. And I love her old Tim Sample tapes...

thejetman- I've lived in the great state of Georgia all my life (with the exception of college), and lived in Gwinnett County from 1981 to 2007. I agree with what you say, but it's not the native Georgians for the most part. 20 years ago you could walk through a lot of Atlanta and never have a problem. There were the few areas that every local knew to stay away from after dark, but it was generally safe. This was the case up until around the time of the Olympics. I guess that is when word got out up north about Atlanta. Now don't get me wrong, not all northerners are Yankees. But for every good northerner that moved to the Atlanta area, there is at least two damn Yankees that moved here.

And as far as the local gov'ts go, just look at who is running the gov't. You just can't let the foxes run the henhouse. The top three reasons I say this (I'm sure you probably have heard about),1-Mayor Shirley Franklin shutting down the FD, then getting in an argument with the protesters. 2-Clayton County BoE, loosing accreditation for their school district; they started out by hiring a new super that the accreditation commitee said they didn't want in there and that he would do absolutely no good in helping them. 3-City of Lithonia, the ordeal with all the fighting between the mayor and the Chief of Police.

I don't know when you moved to the area (you never stated how long you lived here), but if you want to see what the native people of Atlanta are like, you need to go a minimum of 40 miles outside of the perimeter. I was fed up with what you talked about, and finally got around to moving. I now live in Jasper County, where people are still civilized, decent, respectful and care about other people more than they do themselves.

Get away from the city and you'll discover what true Southern Hospitality is, and why it is talked about far and wide.
