Hello,

I have a few questions to ask about AR-15 .22LR conversions.

First are they at all accurate I mean enough to hunt squirels with or are they just for plinking around.

How expensive are they who makes a the best one.

Thats all I can think of right now if there is anything else I need to know about this please feel free to include any information or experiences you have had on the subject

Thanks
Smithiac

Okay, are you talking drop in conversion, or a dedicated upper? Both are minute of squirel out to at least 70yd, and with good ammo, farther. SOme dedicated uppers are very accurate, with custom barrels from lother walther and others.

Typically Spikes tactical is lauded as the best, my dedicated upper is one of theirs, and no complaits here. Very well made, accurate, and doesn't jam with federal bulk pack.

I have a spikes .22 dedicated upper. I can hit shotgun shells at 50 yards offhand with it. I think it will do fine for squirrels.

I was thinking drop in conversions but not opposed to complete upper. I guess it boils down to cost effectiveness. If I can hunt with a drop in conversion and it costs $100.00 or I can set up an upper for $300.00 I would probably just go with a drop in conversion. I am looking at about 20yds being about the farthest shot taken in the woods.

Well, both of those prices are to good to be true, a kit will be $200 and a upper more around $550+..... For those ranges, if you are a good shot, no squirrel will be safe:D

Thanks for the input I was just posting those prices as an example I knew it would be more than that. Now where do I find this conversion.

Thanks

fwiw, i've seen kits at the last couple gunshows (dec/jan) going in the $130-150 range

Spikes has a three week backorder or so on their kits, not all that long, and they are known for getting their stuff out on time. Their kits are more than the standard ciener kit, but better quality too.

I just don't see the value in $550-600 for a dedicated upper in .22lr when I could buy a 10/22 or 597 for much less.

That does not mean I will not get one some day, but right now the math is not working out in my mind.

that drop in conversion seems reasonable for $200.00. It will atleast give me a more practicle purpose for having the AR around.

I paid $475 for my dedicated upper.

If you shoot it, you wouldn't wonder about the value. Apart from the crossover training factor, it's simply a better .22 semiautomatic. It goes much longer between cleanings, it is much more reliable, the magazines are much more pleasant to load. Cleaning the gun is much easier, with no spring wrestling required, and cleaning the magazine is like cleaning a skinny little AR mag, not the nightmare of a 10/22 magazine.

There are other good .22 semiautos out there, and I understand questioning the value of a gimmick gun. However, this gun is objectively a very good .22 semiauto rifle, not just the gimmick it seems to be.

I just finished putting mine together on a spare Mega upper. The barrel and bolt are from Spike's. The new stock (Magpul MOE) and two more BDM mags should be here today.......

I have a Millet red dot for it, but let my nephew borrow it till he gets his BUIS on his rifle.

It should pay for itself rather quickly once the weather warms up a bit....

Brownells has the CMMG kit for $199 ($179 if you have an 01/03 FFL). Works great, mine hasn't cared what brand ammo I run through it (mostly use the Aguila sold by CMP). And the Black Dog mags work great.

Sorry to thread-jack, but what brand is your rear BUIS on that rifle, Donkee?

I am looking to get a Ciener kit for my Colt as well, but really to just practice for military qualifications. Shouldn't need a new barrel for that range (25 meters), should I?

It's an ARMS 40. Be sure to blue locktite it down though. It did come loose once and almost fell off when I had it on another rifle.

I got it to the range today to start breaking it in. Ran about 150 rds through it. The only problem was one stovepipe. I think it was from all the moisture on it from the snow coupled with the 3 degree temp. I am very pleased with the Spike's barrel and bolt! I think I want to build a spare.

If you don't shoot an AR much, it probably doesn't make financial sense. With the cost of 5.56 these days, it didn't take too many bricks of .22 for me to make up the cost of the upper vs. shooting 5.56.

I own other semi-auto .22s, but this is now the one that get's shot the most, since trigger time on the AR is both fun and good practice.

thanks for everyones replies I tried to find something at the gunshow last weekend and didn't find anything

Give Spike's a call.

I called 2 weeks ago, they shipped my stuff that day. I had heard they were 6-8 weeks behind. Maybe it's cause I didn't want the M4 style barrel with the grenade launcher cut out.

They will fix ya up.

Replaced the old pic with the new! That rifle sure is fun!
