Heres an alternative to having a Garand

I had a Romanian PSL for several years and also the Garand. The PSL shot very well but not as well as the Garand.
I found the stock too short on the PSL and kind of clunky in the field.
The Garand balances much better even though it too is a little on the clunky side. I can see the compatison the OP is trying to make as far fetched as it is. All I have to add is I no longer own the PSL. The Garand is still in my safe and still one of my favorites.

Also, the 308 & the 7.62x54 have a much closer usefull case capacity than the russian to the 06.

7.62X51 = 56gr of H2O
7.62X54 = 64gr of H2O
30-06 = 68gr of H2O
so no case volume of 54r and the 06 are closer

And to the OP I already have a Garand and accept no substitutes

the ONLY alternative to having a Garand, is have TWO Garands...

A few years back, Col. Cooper suggested that every American should have a Garand in their closet...

I just can't seem him endorsing the Dragunov/PSL as an alternative.

Col. Cooper was a traditionalist, and hard to impress. There were many, many pistols and rifles that he did not favor. That doesn't mean there was anything wrong with them, but he did not care for them personally.

See, I thought for a minute that this was going to be about a PSL or an SVD-clone in .30-06.

THAT is something I would like.

It would allow you to shoot cheap surplus ammo from the CMP, and not have to worry about the corrosive chemicals in a semi-auto the way you would if you shoot the cheap 7.62x54 surplus.

I once had a PSL...trust me it was no "alternative" to the M1 Garand! There's no such thing and like lionking stated the closest thing is the M1A. At best the PSL is a beefed up AK-47. The Romanians have a lot to learn about fit and finish. The iron sights are crude the 4x IOR optics good though. The only saving grace is that the rifles are accurate enough and go bang every time.

IMO the M1 Garand has no alternative, just some guns that kinda do the same thing.
