I basically want a really lightweight, really accurate, all-purpose .308. Price is no object. I am looking at a Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight, and a SAKO 85 Finnlight. I would prefer a stainless barrel, but not at the expense of extra weight, any suggestions?

Also any suggestions for a nice all-purpose scope and quick-detach mount?

Look at the Ruger RSI. It is light, accurate and is a really beautiful rifle.

Check out the Kimber line. If synthetic is your thing go with the montana, if you like wood then the classic or select grade. These rifles are light and accurate. I will never part with mine.

GoodKat,

I prefer the Kimber Montana over other rifles. It has a three position safety like the M70 and its control round feed. The rifle has a low recoil state of the art stock and it weighs less than many others at 5 lb 2 oz.

Also its made in the USA.

I have had many rifles for a long time including a battery of pre 64 M70's. Mannlichers, ZB Brno 22F and 21H etc and I like the Kimber these days.

Tikka T3 Lite, it's about as light as you're going to get for a .308 rifle.

The Kimber is a full pound lighter than the Tikka, which is also an excellent gun. The stock design and recoil pad on my Kimber really help with recoil. In my experience both are equally accurate. The Tikka will be less than 1/2 the price of the Kimber. But you did say price was no object.

For a light weight quality scope Leupold is the best choice. I would go with the VX-2 in a 2-7 on a lightweight. That is what I have on my Kimber. In Talley lightweight mounts mine weighs 5 lbs 14 oz. scoped. A fixed 4X Leupold would be 2-3 oz lighter and cheaper as well.

I don't know much about quick detachable mounts, but think the Warnes look good.

I have a 'NULA', New Ultra Light Arms rifle. It is easily my most accurate rifle! I am considering a Kimber Montana next as they are very similar and Kimer is licensing the actions or the stocks from NULA (I can't remember off the top of my head). By going with the Kimber I'll still be able to get into reloading with the difference.

My opinion is you can't go wrong with either.

never owned one, but had the honor of shooting my aunts. it was the finest rifle i have ever held or fired. i doubt i will ever be able to afford one. tikkas, sakos, rems, wins, rugers, kimbers, weatherbys, and the likes will continue to roll of the assembly lines for years to come. nulas are built by one guy by hand to your specs. if you have the means, grab it.

Ruger mkII Hawkeye, my father's 30.06 in walnut is pretty light and accurate and only $600. I'm sure the synthetic stock would be lighter too.

a few of the best ever, all used remmy's. 600,mohawk, 660, and the super accurate 788. the 600 mohawks came with a 18 inch bbl, and full vent rib, with the ever amazing dogleg knife cutter bolt handle, you don't see these made anymore.

if you want something really light, look at a new remmy in mountain titanium model. not sure if they have this in 308 cal though, but might be bigger cals.

Oh yeah, one more, the remmy model 7, is a lightweight miracle, and all come in short actions; I bet if one were to find this with a synth stock, it would weigh
minus pounds.

I'm happy with my Rem 700 Ti. Reliable 3/4 MOA, so far, which isn't bad for an old guy who smokes, drinks coffee and suffers from trifocalitis. :) 6.5 pounds with Leupold 3x9 scope, sling and ammo. I certainly prefer the 22" barrel over the common lightweight offerings of 20". The balance is excellent.

I'm still thinking about getting a Ruger bolt-action carbine and putting in the 10-round M1A magazine. From what I've seen it fits in perfectly with no modifications to the rifle at all, only removing and replacing the trigger guard. I don't have the link to the website currently, but there's a guy who does "truck guns" and will put a stripper clip guide on bolt actions. The ones on his sight are Savages but I think he would do other manufacturer's just as well.

I saw 1 BLR, I would also suggest a Savage 99 with detacable mag. Both levers will shoot under 1.5 MOA, quick loads, light, well balanced, and short.
I have thought about cutting down the barrel on my 99 to 16" but so far I'm content.
