What would your minimum comfortable firearm battery be?

Mine would be the following:
* Rifle in .22LR - for pest control
* Pump 12GA - for hunting birds, home defense
* Bolt action .30-06 - for All-Around big game hunting
* AR15 - for SHTF
* Revolver .357 - for personal carry, night stand & ammo versatility

3 ARs.
One in .22lr.
One in .223.
One in 6.5x47 lapua. (or .308, if i really have to)
Sagia 12.
One Glock in 10mm.
Well really, this would be way more than the MININUM i would be comfortable with. But for all uses, this is the basic kit.

Well, I only have a couple dozen now. I keep trying to convince my wife that's the bare minimum...except for the next one I need.

7

* AR-15
* 9mm handgun
* 22 handgun

You don't need a shotgun to hunt birds, you only need a shotgun to hunt birds on the wing. You dont need a shotgun for home defence; The AR or 9mm can do it as good or better. You don't need a 30-06 bolt action to hunt big game: You only need a 30-06 bolt gun for hunting big game at 300+ yards from a treestand.

Those three do everything you would ever need to do. You may not be able to do some things under the restriction of modern hunting laws, but with some small modification in tactics, they can get you buy.

Rem 870 12 gauge
a reliable, double stack, full size 9mm handgun
Marlin 30-30
Semi auto military style rifle (AK, AR, FAL, etc.)
and a reliable semi .22

1 22 rifle and pistol / revolver
1 shotgun 12 or 20
1 bolt action centerfire
1 pistol / revolver centerfire

Ar-15 with Acog
&
.45 1911

Any thing I can't handle with these I'd be running from anyways.

I agree with mr.trooper except not sure if you need the .22 - it is nice to practice with and the ammo is cheap. The only thing I'd add is I would add a backup gun for each of these plus spare parts. That way you're prepared if one has to be repaired and you can repair each one.

So make that:
2 x AR-15 in .223
2 x 9mm autoloader pistol
2 x 22LR autoloader pistol
Spare parts for each

I'd also add for each caliber: 10 magazines and 1000 rounds of ammo.

Shotgun: 12 gauge with 26 and 18 in barrel

Pistols: 9mm compact, .380 pocket gun

Rifle: S.A. M1A with the 18in(?) barrel and scout scope.

One pistol and rifle in 22lr.

Time and time again I see this kind of post, and people putting up messages as if they have something to contribute.
If you're gonna' put together a "minimum collection" of firearms, please have the presence of mind to look at ammunition availability! In the last couple of months, I have been to a few places that had the customary pallet or two of ammo in the middle of the floor. In those piles, I have not seen one single round of 10 auto, .30/30, or .30/'06. Not a single one.
If I had begun those 2 mos. ago with the intention of amassing 5,000 rounds of ammo in any given caliber, those calibers could only be .223, 7.62 x 39, .308, 9mm and .22 LR.
If you cannot obtain ammo for any particular firearm, it IS NOT a firearm!

1 x22LR Rifle
2x combat caliber handguns (one for spare)
1x shotgun not counting a 410
1x centerfire rifle, large than 22 hornet

1-AR-15 with a couple of different caliber/upper assemblies.
1-.22LR semi-automatic pistol.
1-.22LR semi-automatic rifle.
1-M1911 semi-automatic pistol with a couple of different caliber/slide assemblies.
1-12 gauge pump action shotgun with a couple of different barrels.

Comfortable in what way? To simply feel comfortable in my home at night tucked away in a safe suburb, I'd feel fine with any of my handguns (of .38 caliber or larger) or my 12 guage pump shotgun.

To feel comfortable for all my possible needs for the rest of my life, including concealed carry, bird hunting, home defense, target practice/plinking, hiking/camping, and any kind of imaginary "SHTF" scenario, I think I'd be able to get by with these 3:

• Ruger GP100 4" stainless .357 Magnum revolver
• Remington 870 Marine w/ 28" and 18.5" barrels
• Winchester 94 .30-30

Plus my RCBS reloading setup with all components needed to reload indefinitely for these 3 firearms.

I'd say a mortar battery is about the minimum.

Sorry, bad joke, it's just that (AFAIK) a battery of arms is a unit of artillery that is grouped to make battlefield communications easier. "Battery X, fire at Y" instead of "gun 1, fire at Y; gun 2, fire at Y; gun 3, fire at Y;...." So I was making a bit of a funny. Not much of one.

If you are talking working arsenals... that kinda depends on where I lived and why I had guns there.

As an urban dweller I have guns that are totally impractical in my real world (e.g. a .222 bolt rifle...what am I supposed to do with that? My world doesn't contain varmints of the sort it was designed to hunt.) but I haven't sold because, well, I have no reason to sell them. If I had to pare down the collection for financial reasons the last to go would be either a small .38 revolver (city) or a single-shot 20ga (rural). If the reason was non-financial (political, what have you) I might choose a different set.

Kinda depends upon the number of people in your family that shoot.

If you hold to the "2 = 1, 1=0" philosophy then you'd need at least one of each category for each family member and a spare.

(X + 1)

Bolt gun
Carbine
.22 rifle
Shotgun
Full size pistol
Concealable carry pistol

For a family of 3 that could mean a minimum of two dozen firearms. If just one person shot a different pistol then you'd be looking at adding 4 more guns for a total of 28. If no one shot the same pistol you'd be looking at adding 8 more for a total of 32.

.22 rifle
.22 pistol
.45 acp 1911 (fullsize)
.45 acp 1911 (commander)
.12 gauge shotgun
.223 or .308 rifle

12 gauge pump action shotgun
.308 or .30-06 bolt action rifle
.357 revolver, 4-inch barrel
.40 S&W (or 9mm) semiauto pistol
.22 LR pistol
.22 LR rifle

Yeah, I guess I could cut it to six if I had to.
