Hi everyone, I've recently acquired a marlin 336 30-30. Now i have experience with shotguns(i have both a 12ga and 20ga mossberg 500) but my rifle experience is limited and man this gun beats me up! Shooting off a bench hurts, after about 5 rounds i have to take a break, but when i shoot standing up it doesn't bother me nearly as much. So obviously I'm doing something wrong. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

I think the typical tendency is to let the bench do the work of holding the rifle, so that you don't pull the stock as tightly against your shoulder as you would when standing. This lets the stock build up momentum and increases felt recoil. My suggestion is to concentrate on pulling the rifle back firmly; that should help.

Well, if you have no trouble with your 500, then I suspect it's mostly that you are not used to bench-style shooting. The recoil feels worse when you are shooting from a bench because it is directed more into your shoulder as opposed to being partly absorbed by your entire body, since you cannot really 'roll' with the shot. Also, your posture might need some work, but I'm not sure how to explain that :p

EDIT: That too ^ ^ ^

Yep, shooting from the bench is unpleasant.

I have a Mossberg 500 20ga too, and checking slugs for deer season from the bench sucked. I'm not a recoil junkie, but I could manage an afternoon of sporting clays with it. From the bench 5-6 slug rounds are plenty.

If you want to do a LOT of rifle shooting (from a bench), add a .22 to your collection.

Fire a box of 3" mag slugs through that 12 gauge and that 30-30 will feel like a pussy cat!
I've got a 336 and use to have the same problem, try sitting and using your knees as a rest, might tame it a bit for ya.

Agreed , most .30-30s should not be that unpleasant. I am no recoil sponge but used to shoot my .444 Marlin lever off the bench but it had to held firmly to the shoulder.
