Pizza man fires on attackers, kills one

Sheriff says shooting of Irmo High student was self-defense

By JOHN MONK - [email protected]

Updated 8:26 p.m.
An Irmo pizza delivery man ambushed by a group of young men shot and killed one of his assailants, an Irmo High School senior, late Saturday, causing the others to flee, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said this afternoon.

Alleged robber Paul Andrew Sturgill Jr., 17, of Kenna Drive near Irmo, was pronounced dead of at least one gunshot wound later at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, Sheriff James Metts said. An autopsy will be performed Monday.

Relatives and neighbors expressed shock over the death of Sturgill, whom they said had been an honor student and musician. His family said he planned to join the Army, with a goal of becoming an airborne ranger, after graduating from Irmo High School this year.

The family showed photos of a tall, slender, clean-cut young man.

The pizza delivery man, Christopher Steven Miller, 43, had a concealed weapons permit and was trying to retreat from the suspects while being beaten by one attacker, Metts said.

At this point, Metts said, it appears that Miller acted within the law and will not face any charges. However, police have made no final decisions and will discuss the incident with prosecutors, he said.

One of the suspected robbers, Justin Towan Roundtree, 18, of Emery Lane near Irmo, was at large Sunday afternoon and charged with robbery and criminal conspiracy. Roundtree is suspected of having a connection to a gang, Metts said. Metts did not have details.

The dead youth, Sturgill, supposedly had a good reputation and people whom detectives are interviewing are surprised that he might have been involved in a robbery, Metts said.

Metts said the incident happened about 10:30 p.m. on Avery Place Lane near Irmo, near Irmo High School off St. Andrews Road. An order had been called in to Pizza Hut on Irmo Drive for two large, thin-crust pizzas with extra cheese for delivery to a house on Avery Lane. However, when Miller showed up with the pizzas, he was met by a young man outside the house to whom he was delivering the pizza, Miller told detectives.

In fact, Metts said, the suspects had called the order in on a cell phone. The people who lived in the house had no knowledge of the pizza request, Metts said.

Miller gave this version of events to police, Metts said: When Miller exited his car, the young man began to beat him. Miller saw two other men come out of a nearby woods and began running away. As he ran, he drew a .45 caliber Taurus handgun from a fanny pack. As the man continued to beat him, Miller fired, hitting him in the upper torso. The shots caused the two other men to run off.

Also in custody Sunday afternoon were: Jason Todd Beckham, 18, of Emory Lane, and Carlos Renard Dates, 20, of Nursery Hill Road near Irmo. Both are charged with robbery and criminal conspiracy.

The pizzas were worth $25.13.

I hope Pizza Hut doesn't fire this guy like they have others before him. It appears as though having his gun and being aware of the situation may have saved his life (or at least a hospital stay).

Looks like these thugs picked the wrong pizza delivery man to screw with. They got what they deserved. I am sure they will try filing civil lawsuits against the man, killing an innocent, honor student. Guess the guys thought it be fun to thrash a dumb, stupid pizza boy. In the end, it was them who were dumb. I think he should press charges on the attackers and file lawsuit against them to ward off any counter civil suit they may try to come up with.

At this point, Metts said, it appears that Miller acted within the law and will not face any charges. However, police have made no final decisions and will discuss the incident with prosecutors, he said.
I cannot believe they would say they still are looking if any charges should filed against the delivery driver. What a messed up legal system we have. If someone is beating you, especially in a group of thugs, you should have the legal right to shoot all of them to defend your life.

Oh yeah, boo hoo, our little angel (robber) friend couldn't have done anything like that. Except he did.

Right or wrong, if it's Pizza Hut, they'll fire him. I haven't given a dime to Pizza Hut in years.

The pizzas were worth $25.13.
They weren't after the pizzas.

This comes just after two pizza delivery guys were gunned down with automaic rifles in Antrim (UK), yesterday.

Gun control-- pizza guy gets shot
No gun control-- pizza guy fights back.

"Two large, thin-crust pizzas with extra cheese? Would you like an order of lead with that?"

sorry sorry I know, I'm terrible

I hope that more people start to realize there are more and more armed individuals out there everyday, They possibly could have gotten $50 or less from him..$50 isn't worth your life.

Unfortunately this guy will be fired.

I work for the same the franchise and they make you sign a paper promising not to carry ANY kind of weapon for self-defense including pepper spray.:barf:

Lot's of drivers ignore the rules and many managers even turn a blind eye but once you have to shoot you can kiss your job goodbye.

But over all you can always find another job but once you're dead or crippled it's permanent.

They got what they deserved. I am sure they will try filing civil lawsuits against the man, killing an innocent, honor student.

I doubt that will fly in SC if the shooting is ruled justifiable self defense.

The ongoing perusal of the exact circumstances of the shooting is routine for much of SC. They have a peculiar view of the details of some of their laws. Forgetting to dot every i and cross every t can get you in trouble with shooting in self defense in SC.

Now the devil is in the details anywhere in that situation. But, moreso in SC.

Over the years I've noted several people who were charged-and convicted-of voluntary manslaughter in SC where they'd have gotten an 'alls clear' here in Georgia.

I just dont understand the thinking of some people. Especially where people can carry legally. I mean for one why throw a good portion of you life away going to jail and having a criminal record for such small sums. But to even think of risking you life for a few bucks just confounds me.

So many young lives are lost to peer pressure and drugs (which usually are started do to peer pressure also). I feel sorry for the fella that has to go on with his life after protecting himself. He will never be the same again Im sure, but at least he is alive and can go home to his family. I just hope he can find another job if he looses his.

We need to start contacting Pizza Hut in regards to this guy's job both corperate & the franchise

You couldn't pay me to be a pizza delivery driver. THey get setup all the time and that job has so many risks for the lousy, miniscule paycheck you get. I did the job when I was young and after some of the death threats and violent outbursts some customers gave me over a pizza, I knew I was not sticking around with this lousy minimum wage job. Screw the tips.

Isn't it always this? Give me a break.....

"He was a likable and affable man, widely respected in the community. A good Catholic and sharp businessman. He served in community groups and volunteered his time entertaining children. Generous, hard working, and friendly"

That was a quote from one of John Wayne Gacy's neighbors.

No one ever knows what's inside the heart of another.

And yeah, Pizza Hut will fire this guy. I won't spend a dime with them because of their history of this.

Geez that doesn't exactly give me the warm fuzzies. Back on topic though, maybe we should all contact Pizza Hut and suggest that they change their policy?

Pizza Hut will fire the guy. Fine. So be it.

I hope they bury the pie with the dead and bill the estate. That way they can write off the job as complete and hire the next person to do the work.

The guy who started Second Chance body armor compnay had the same experience while delivering pizzas. He had a 22 pistol and killed one of several attackers. Of course he was in Detroit.

I reckon a lot of people are aware of Pizza Hut's "show your belly and hope for the best" policy on self protection, which increases the changes of getting mugged. Now, they'll likely make it clear that they don't tolerate armed drivers and fire him, setting up the next robberies.

Their position is that if a robber thinks your armed, they'll just escalate and plug you to start with. Kind of a tradin' your security for safety type of thing. Shame on them for bad policy and not having the sense got gave turnips.

I'm sure we'll be seeing Gloria Allred on the daily news shows all week now, consoling this punk's 'grieving family', whining about discrimination and the other routine b.s....

There is a certain process to these things. Are there witnesses? Its the pizza guys word vs the high school boys. Yeah there is a 99% chance the story is true, but you always have to cover your but with the 1% that the pizza man was some deranged person who murdered and fabricated the whole story. Not saying the boys are inocent.....just saying there are certain steps to be taken.

Good for the pizza delivery man. Way to be responsible for your safety.

With these kinds of stories, it never ceases to amaze me that people will say, why did he shoot them over $25.13 worth of pizza?

WRONG QUESTION!!!!

The question each of these people needs to ask is to the stupid criminal that decides their or somebody else's life is only worth, 2 pizzas, a car radio, a 12 pack of beer, etc... etc...

Newsflash...... If they weren't committing crimes, chances are they wouldn't be there getting shot and killed. Simple as that. I get tired of reading posts on THR where the theme is, property isn't worth killing over.

TELL THAT TO THE FREAKING CRIMINALS, NOT THE LAW ABIDING CITIZENS THAT ARE PROTECTING THEIR LIVES AND PROPERTY. :fire:

I live about 10 minutes from where this happened. SC Castle Doc. has been improved over the years. Sheriff Metts is a pretty good guy. Nothing like Leon Lott in Columbia (Michael Phelps).

I will be highly surprised if charges are filed. I have a couple deputies that are close friends. I will ring them up tomorrow and get the inside scoop. I will let everyone know what I find out.
