Great photo, it has been making the rounds since about 2003. Experts confirm that the photo appears to be undoctored, but the alleged identities of the men have never been confirmed.

Comments on the photo I've seen in other publications: The photo is variously dated from 1883 to 1887, but some of these men would still be teenagers during that time frame. Biographies indicate that some of these men (maybe Roy Bean and Theodore Roosevelt, for instance) were far away from the site of the photgraph in the late 1880's. After leaving his ranch in the winter of 1885/86 Roosevelt was got married in London, followed by a 2 year honeymoon in Europe. Roy Bean was holding court 1500 miles south, probably unable to travel that distance to Montana to sit for a photograph, then return to south Texas without being missed.

Still a great photo, and several of the men really do look like the men purported to be represented.

I thought that Jeremiah Johnson did never exist. The real man was John Johnston, and his life inspired the movie..

He was also a Sheriff in Red Lodge MT. I was there in 2004.

For me, all those people coulndt be there, at the same time.. Seems to me that, for example, Buch Cassidy should look much younger than some of the people portrayed there..

Hmmmm, nice picture, but color me doubtfull. Why would Butch & Sundance be hanging around for a casual photograph with all those lawmen? President Roosevelt?

This is one of those "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story ... or photo" kind of pictures. You have to be skeptical -- unless, of course, all of these guys had just joined the Secret Service and were there to help protect the president.

But TR wouldn't have been president until about 20 years after that photo.

Was TR even famous or well known in 1883? If not then isn't kind of strange that he would be labeled with all the well-known famous lawmen and outlaws years before he himself became famous while leading the Rough Riders?

Sorry but I don't believe the photo is real. Those people could be anybody AFAIC.

I wonder why Tom Horn and Frank James didn't stop by that day to get in on the shot also.

That's a good question. TR would have only been 25 years old in 1883. That does not appear to be a 25 year old TR.

I can't speak for Tom Horn, but I'd wager Frank was far too busy keeping Jesse out of jail.

Tom was trying to find some 45-65 ammo... a new president was just elected, and those were flying off the shelves..

Here's a picture of Liver Eating Johnston....he was a sheriff in his later years, died in 1900....not sure when he quit eating injun livers? Both photos of him look similar.

It obviously was the first NRA convention. They were all firm believers in the 2A, so they came to show support.

I like the photo no matter what the reason.
