Why did Colt stop making the Commander?

Dunno. They did last time I called back and was asking about something ... although that was at least couple of years ago, come to think about it.

Are you saying this linked info is out-of-date?

I know the lightweight Commander isn't on the roster of approved guns here in CA, but the all stainless Commander is on it.

Of course, so's the stainless Python 6" model I3060CS ...

Maybe a dealer will be able to clarify it for you. I don't keep up on all of the models Colt is making as much as with other manufacturers.

Colt still offers 3 different Commanders.

1. The plain jane Series 80 Commander, Blued (steel frame).

2. Enhanced XSE Combat Commander, Stainless (steel frame).

3. Enhanced XSE Light Weight Commander, Stainless (alum Frame).

Here is the plain jane Series 80 Commander I bought a few months ago. These are a good deal IMO. I paid $730.00 out the door, tax and everything.

I've got about 500rnds thru it so far and it has been 100% with all my mags (Wilson 47D, Wilson ETM, Colt 7rnd) and as for ammo, 100% with Ball, Hollow Points, and 185gr lead SWC's (over 6gr of WW231).

It has no problems shooting 1" - 1 3/4" one hole groups at 15yrds if I do my part.

DW/CZ makes a nice 1911. No doubt in my mind. I've shot a bunch of them and if one was given to me (or I could get a real good deal on one) I'd be proud to own it.

That said there are a lot of DW/CZ fan boys on here that will tell you COLT is an old dead dinosaur, worse than brand X and a DW is just a million times better.

That's a million miles from the truth. The real truth is you can't go wrong with either.

I really prefer Colts -- they make a fantastic pistol, recommend them highly. But as things go, I've picked up a CBOB myself & honestly can't find anything to complain about --

I do have two Colt Series 70 full size in blue. Brand new. I love em but think I would also like to carry that shorter barrell around town.

I know it's hard to explain the thoughts of the insane, but does anyone know the "rational" behind that?

I have a pre-80's series Combat Commander that I have been know to carry. Great pistol and a great package. I highly endorse anything Colt.

I have taken a look at the Dan Wesson and it seems like a nice piece.
This seems like a case of having two great pistols to choice from. I would lean to the Colt because I like blued guns, but again, both nice picks.

They haven't and it is a heck of a pistol at a great price, the General has done a good job with Colt.

I didn't ask why when I spoke to someone there, but they aren't the only manufacturer who doesn't invest the money to add, and then maintain, their entire handgun inventory on the roster in CA.

I found the stainless steel version of the colt Commander to almost came home with me that day. The only consideration was the cost.

Maybe in the future I will have that Colt Stainless Commander to go with the S&W when the pennies are saved. These were the full sized guns when I checked it over for purchase in the .45 ACP.

Colt hasn't stopped making the Commander. They can just be hard to find at times.

Perhaps a dealer just told you that to sell you something he has?

Colt Commander

I just got a 2009 Colt Catalog and they have several variations listed for sale. I have an all steel 1991 series and it kicks a little more than my full sized 1911s. Seems pretty accurate.

Every single pistol, even if only different in color, must be submitted to testing to CA DOJ, this includes 2 for destruction testing. Many companies do not bother to do this and just decide on which of their 'best sellers' to submit in CA.

Remember that CA is anti CCW in most of the urban areas, so a lightweight commander isn't as sought after for carry purposes.

The Combat Commander is available, since I bought one.

How are they selling? If they are selling well, Colt will discontinue them.

Aw geez, don't say that - I'm waiting for them to regain some popularity and make my old lightweight worth something again. I guess it'll always be held back by it's caliber though, huh?

That's a fine looking 9mm, krs! I love the alloy framed 9mm Commanders. For .45 ACP, though, I prefer steel.
Any of them are nice, but for some reason Colt's refuses to properly fit the beavertail safety on the XSE series guns.
Not sure why.

I gotta tell ya, that a butt-ugly trigger on the Colt(s).

That being said, I think I'm starting to regret the DW purchase and perhaps selected the Colt Commander.

Something about a slightly looser gun makes me sleep better at night.

I have (2) of the fullsize Colt 1911s and they they eat any and all of that old range junk like nobody's business - and I'm pretty bad at cleaning them (bout every 500 rounds).

Never had a failure to feed, stovepipe, failure to eject etc etc.

I don't own either, and would be happy with one or the other. I bought the S&W1911PD Commander with scandium frame and laser grips. Nice and light for carry but not so much fun at the 200 round mark in a long range session.

Does Dan Wesson make the Commander NOT bobbed? I never did like the feel of the bobbed guns, but I really like the way the DW is set up.

the weight difference between the alloy and steel framed 9mm Commander is only 4 oz. Not a big difference to carry but it's noticable when firing.

I need one of those double shoulder holsters to put Commanders in... 1CombatCommander1.gif
