Just picked up from FFL dealer who transfers my auction scores, scored this awesome "minty" M48 Mauser.Look forward to a test firing.

I read that the M48 was never issued to troops, kind of surprising given the ugly war that happened in former Yugoslavia. Are there any instances of rebels or anybody using them though?

Very nice. Has it been reworked? FWIW,get your C&R license to have the mil-surps shipped directly to your home and save the transfer fee. 30 dollars for three years as opposed to whatever your FFL charges.

I have one in just as nice condition...looks minty and unissued. Truely M48s are one of the best mauser deals out there. If your looking to get one mauser or just your first, then I highly suggest the M48.

That's a nice M48! Good find. I'd add one of those to the collection if I could find one for a good deal.

jpwilly it just takes time and patience following the auctions.I have been looking for one this condition for a while.A few I pasted over either because people ran up the bidding too much or because the seller wouldn't provide clear and numerous photos.

This one I won for a price they were going for in unissued condition a "few years back" maybe just slightly more. The Yugo 27/47 which I have also are plentiful right now and good shooters for a reasonable price.M48 and M48A availabilty is starting to seem more scarece but they pop up often enough.

Jimmy don't think it is a rework, just was stored in a Commy warehouse until they sold them for export.Could be wrong though..

Just searched gunbroker this guy has one for a decent price looks not unissued but decent and a shooter

here is a minty one for a little more unless people bid it up,great why did I have to see this,if it doesn't get bid on I might go for it just because...

By the time of the civil wars in the early 90's they were considered obsolete and were not issue rifles. But as you have astutely observed, when in time of war any gun will do. So yes, many were pressed into service during the war, sometimes with military scopes or hunting scopes to be used as a sniper. Note though this was a field expedited thing, so there is no official scope mount or scope.

I myself have two M48's with soldier artwork (a telltale trait of being used in the civil war) One with a painting of snakes on it, and another with a metric ton of carvings all over the stock.

There is a great webpage dealing with the M48 as a sniper Here

And another written by a Serbian sniper pictured below Here

How much was your M48 and are there any more available? I could stand to add another bolt rifle to the collection. :)

hammerhead I don't know if wholesellers have M48 anymore, they do have the 24/47 though.I paid $310 plus $25 shipping on it.Decent deal considering the condition and that normally I see bidding go higher than that.

They are not that rare, just keep tabs on the auction sites and at some point they can be had possibly at gunshows also.Ammo though is another story right now 8mm is kind of scarce except for pricey ammo.I have a decent supply of PP and S&B ammo for a while thank goodness.
