Some background/context on the question-

I got a lefty Stag (m4 profile) for my 11 year old son. He had a stroke as an infant and has strength and fine motor control issues with his right arm/hand. He is right eye dominant. We have done the eye patch thing and he shoots OK with the iron sights on the AR.

Last week, a friend had a scoped rifle (.22 mag) at the range and let my son shoot it. He went from being OK at 50 yards to being Dead Eye Dick/Tom Berenger (Sniper:D) at 100. He tore it up and loved it. He wants to stay with the left handed AR but would like a scoped set up. I'm planning on replacing the collapsible rear stock with a fixed A1, and working on improving his cheek weld (will switch to A2 as he grows).

I'd like to put a 20" barrel on the gun and set it up for scoped use. Will any barrel work, or do I need to buy one specifically made by Stag to fit left hand receivers? Sorry for the long story to ask a short question. Thanks!

Barrels are the same. It's the bolt face (with extractor and ejector) that are necessary for a left hand ejection port.

I've heard it said that you need a barrel with an Ambi-extentsion to work in the lefty Stags. But I've also heard that you can use any extension and thus any barrel. I've been looking for an Ambi barrel for months and have yet to find one for sale anywhere, ditto for a complete 20" lefty upper. I've decided to just go ahead and get a regular barrel and have it installed on a lefty upper, I've compared extensions and really see no reason why this wouldn't work just fine.

FWIW here's an email from Stag I got when I asked about the extension and 20" barrels.

The ambidextrous barrel extension is $22.00 and the 20” barrel with the ambidextrous barrel extension attached is $140.00. The extensions are in stock, but the barrels are backordered about 3-4 months at this time. If you have any further questions please contact us again.

Of course, if you try to install the extension on an already assembled barrel you may run into timing problems so a direct swapped isn't recommended either.

Although, if you have the cash I think Noveske makes a 20" lefty upper that may actually be in stock (since it's so expensive).
