Ive been around for a bit and if you read any of my threads you probably noticed ive been looking at getting my first gun. While as it turns out sometimes talking to the right people helps. This gun was given to me as long as i take pictures after i kill something with it:

The gun is a Mossberg 500 in 12-gauge and is almost new, there is some powder in the shot barrel and almost none in the slug barrel. It came with a 28" Shot and im guessing 26" Slug barrel that are both ported. It also came with the original scope that has never been mounted. I got all 3 choke tubes which is nice.

I'm guessing the previous owner purchased the gun and test fired it when they got it, since then its been on the shelf. I say this because of the limited wear (the action is still hard like a brand new one) and also because the NRA membership ad that came in the box advertises and election year membership which would place the purchase in 2008 or maybe even late 2007.

She should serve you well. With two barrels, that's an excellent starter for a firearm collection - lots of stuff you can do with it. Enjoy, and let us know how it shoots!

Congrats on finally joining the club! That's a nice gun you've got.

Congratulations on your purchase.

12 gauge you say? I think you did well.

Spouse has a 20 gauge with a 22" barrel. I usually use a Imp Cyl choke on hers for slug duty.

May I remind you to open that action and look on the LEFT side inside that reciever to ensure your BARREL matches the rest of the RECIEVER without any gaps?

May I remind you to check that front screw on the ammunition tube to make sure it's tight?

Did you get the little strip of metal that comes with the three choke tubes with the gun? Mossberg makes those where you insert one of the side tabs into the choke itself at the barrel end (AFTER checking to make SURE you are unloaded, magazine empty, action open and safe engaged)

I think you will enjoy the gun very much.

Be careful when firing Brennekes (Or whatever you shoot) at 1450 feet per second, there will be a bit of fire blast and a good kick like a mule shoe into your shoulder. Anything faster will generate harder recoil.

Good luck!

Ha, that was my first gun, too, with the same 2 barrels. It's still probably my most versatile gun.

Oh yes, one more thing if I may.

Check that magazine tube sling holder from time to time if you put a sling on your gun.

You may notice that sling holder rotates a little bit until it runs out of thread and lets go.

If I were limited to only one gun, it would be a setup like yours. You can defend your home, put meat on the table, and have fun with shooting sports. Good choice.

I think the 500 is one of the best economical, general purpose shotguns ever made. I have two of them right now. :)

Be safe and have fun.

Yup i got a choke wrench, also think i forgot to ad that i got the Mossberg lock that goes through the chamber.

Had a guy swear by Gun socks today vs. hardcases, anyone care to step into the debate and add some advice here?

I would agree. Along with the 870 Remington Wingmaster. Two very durable and dependable shotguns.

I don't know if I would store it in ether a gun-sock or a hard case. Most of the gun-socks will hold moisture next to the metal of your firearm. At least with a hard case you can toss some desiccant packs in with the firearm.

I think your best bet would be to pick up a cheap gun safe or gun locker and put a goldenrod in it. That would give you piece of mind that the gun is stored properly, and every time you open it you will be reminded how lonely your mossy is. They really are communal beasts. They need friends for a long happy life. :D

I had gun socks on both guns religiously until we learned to simply place the weapons in a alert status after a few pretend breaking in drills.... we discovered just how long it takes to remove gun sock, open trigger cable, load shells.. etc.

I "died" while choosing the key for the gun's cable in about 12 seconds from wife who pretended to be bad guy invading home.

Now that the guns are ready, they are wiped down weekly and cleaned after each range shoot, otherwise they are left as they are ready to go in less time than you can read this post.

I have soft cases for each gun to take to gunsmith, range or whatever. One of the cases can carry both shotguns backpack style if things got bad. If memory serves they were simple gander type cases that cost me like 100 dollars for the two. They did let me exchange and credit a too short case for a better one so all is well.

I think the gun socks are placed into service last winter as door draft blocks. That should tell you something.

I think to wash gun socks and keep them ready to wrap the sightmark reflex sights should transport happen in the future so they dont get smashed.

Congratulations!

Not everyone knows this about the M500, but if it is loaded and you want to unload it, you don't have to cycle all the shells through the action. Reach up inside the loading port and depress the little arm on the left side, and the shells will come out of the magazine right in your hand.

You made a great choice! That gun will serve well for your entire life if you treat it well. Mossy 500 and/or Rem 870 are "must owns" in my book.

I took it out last evening and put 5 shells through it at the trap range before my jaw started hurting (i recently had lower jaw surgery). I hit 2/5 which considering that was the 3rd time ive been on a trap range felt pretty good for a new gun. My friend who was with me blew off the other 20 shells in the box just so we could run the gun some. Overall the gun felt great, it punches a little but its nothing to prevent me from shooting it.

Right now both barrels are getting the porting extended and the forcing cones are getting lengthened by MagnaPort in Michigan here and so after I get them back tomorrow I'll know what the gun REALLY feels like. Also I'll be sure to get some more pics up of the scope and barrels, the one at the top i just took quickly.

EDIT:
To the person that mentioned .22 thats my next rifle, im going back and forth between the Savage Mk II (Mag fed bolt) and the Ruger 10/22.
