Open carry in Pa

It's permitted, but depending where you are you might get yourself into trouble. Lots of liberal folks from NJ and NY moving out there, especially where you are, that might react negatively. No permit is needed for open carry.

Legal but not wise.

Here in SE PA the only thing open carry will get you is visit from the police.

Either that or a Philly gangbanger shooting you in the back and taking your gun.

Not advisable.

It is legal. It is a good idea to have your LTCF anyway, as it makes carrying in your car simpler.

Go for it! If it's legal, it's legal. Know the law and politely stand your ground.

LMAO! Pretty funny stuff! :D

Just giving my honest opinion.

Central PA is not the Philly area. Difference in culture.

Just because its legal, doesn't mean its smart. At least not here.

Fair enough. So what should this person, following the letter of the law, expect at the hands of the police on their "visit?" I'm not trying to be funny, I really want to know what you've seen.

They have to know that stepping outside of the bounds of enforcing the law opens them to pretty serious risks.

I'll agree that it might not be the most comfortable and inconspicuous thing to do, but you've said it's not "smart" which is a pretty serious thing to say to folks who do, or would like to do, this.

What makes it a dumb idea (forgetting the joke about the 'bangers)?

-Sam

The gangbangers thing is not a joke.

Have you ever been around/near philly? I certainly wouldn't want to open carry there.

Please note that, as Zane posted, a Pennsylvania LTCF or a license/permit from a state which has a reciprocity agreement with Pennsylvania is required for carrying openly in a City of the First Class. A City of the First Class is one with a population of 1,000,000 or more. At present, Philadelphia is the only City of the First Class in Pennsylvania.

There's a pretty enthusiastic open carry movement in PA...so much so, the LEO's have had special training on its legality.
Check out the open carry forum on www.pafoa.org.

Businesses can ask you to leave the premises, but as far as carrying most places, OC is not a problem. However, you should get your LCTF so you can carry in your vehicle.

Gentlemen: I want to thank you for all your prompt and courteous responses. It is a pleasure to post on THR and also a wonderful feeling to know that you live in a free state, or in my case a Commonwealth.

I've open carried in Philadelphia before. Haven't had any issues. And I open carry pretty much daily in Allentown and the surrounding area, with very few problems.

There is truth to that. I live in Central PA and last year there was a HUGE controversy about a local woman who open-carried at a soccer game.

In essence, the real question is this: "how much is your time worth to you?". If it goes to court you'll win. If you get stopped you'll not get in any legal trouble. But it burns time and it burns money, neither of which most of us have in abundance.

So have at it. Just be mindful of what you can expect.

Philly and Philly suburbs are two vastly different environs. Go 45 minutes to an hour west of Philly where I live and there are many wooded areas where I open carry for walks in the woods and plinking. Nobody cares.

Now I wouldn't carry in the King of Prussia mall or populated suburbs where the people form NY and NJ have bought McMansions, but in semi-rural areas near Philly no problem, and these areas are abundant.

Exactly what I meant to say above.

Open carry is 100% legal in PA, including Philthy-delphia.

All officers have received notice, through their annual training that OC is legal in PA, including Philly.

The mere act of OC is NOT disorderly conduct, or any similar violation of of the law.
