I ran across a Smith & Wesson model 63 .22 revolver today for $349. On the right side behind the cylinder it said "To Kevin, From Dad 1990". It was engraved nicely but it obviously affects the value. Would you let this bother you?

"Kevin" should be slapped with a wet squirrel for selling a gun that his dad gave him. It would not bother me until someone was looking at the gun and giving me a puzzled look.

I have one; I have a S&W model 10 from the early 60's that someone carved "R #1" on. It looks like it was done with a handheld engraver, and done poorly. I have no idea what it means.

However, it made it quite a bit cheaper to buy, and is a fantastic shooting revolver...so, I guess I feel like it depends what you want the revolver for. Since I just wanted to shoot it, I was kind of happy to find a gun that had something that made it cheaper without impacting anything except its appearance.

Remove the stock/grips from my guns and some have my name engraved in them with one of those vibrating engravers.

When I did the inside of my S&W 642 frame, I could see that it went through some kind of clear coat finish. I just used a real small artist's brush and carefully "re-painted" over my name with clear Polyurethane.

It would sure bother me if "Kevin" had lost the gun in a gunfight... Otherwise, not so much.

it wouldnt bother me, i like used guns with history to them :) i have my initials engraved on my 1911, and on the kimber 1911 i gave to my fiance the night i proposed i had "Love till death do us part..." engraved in fancy lettering...she loves it and most every1 that sees it thinks its funny that i put that on the pistol *disclaimer-shes a big gun nut like i am, i wouldnt recommend do that for your wife unless she is and has a sense of humor :p*

Would you let this bother you?
Not if my name was Kevin! And I was over 20 YO. Or, if I had a son named Kevin. Or, if I was planning to have a son and would be Ok with naming him Kevin. Or, if you're single you could look around for a divorced woman with a son named Kevin.

Engraved names would not bother me. The only writing on a gun that would bother me would be something irrelgious or offensive.

It would bug the hell out of me, I would have to have it fixed. That is unless the engraved name was James Butler Hickock, Wyatt Earp, Frank Hamer, Skeeter or the like.

Yeah, I'd ask for a substantial discount, with the idea of removing and refinishing later on.
It would bug me every time I cleaned it. Probably every time I looked at it (especially if it were anything like that 95WC deal pictured above. I don't think I could sleep with that atrocity in my safe.).

I'm not big on engraving except on expensive shotguns. On pistols it just turns me off. And this is GOOD engraving, not a production by some illiterate idiot with a scratch awl.

I probably wouldn't buy Kevin's gun, unless I really needed it and nothing else was available. I would hope that there would be a substantial discount involved for the pistols illustrated above in this thread. (FWIW, I can understand the allure of getting 75% off for something I'd keep in the truck, if I lived somewhere where that was practical).

But that's just me. You're welcome to do whatever you like.

I don't think that i wold be much interested in the gun unless it could be had a VERY VERY good price; and even then I would want it removed or covered if possible. It is a sad fact that Kevin did away with a gift of such magnitude from his dad. I suppose there are facts about that, we shall never know.
"Smacking with a wet squirrel", now that is funny!!!

No way would I buy a gun with someone's name or SSN etched on it.

I consider it defacing the gun.

I once bought a near new Browning. Upon disassembly to lube it, I found an SSN etched on the frame. I sold it immediately. From that point on, I won't buy a gun unless I can take it apart to see there are no names or SSNs on the gun.

Haggle a lower price, but look at it this way: you're buying a story as well. Who was Kevin? Why did his dad buy him a gun? Why did he get rid of it? Was it a bad gift? Is Kevin still alive? Did he die and this gun end up in an estate sale? Did Kevin and his dad have a horrible falling out and Kevin sell his gun to spite his old man?

Ya... just name your next kid Kevin......21st birthday present....CHECK

Nice idea.

I've got two handguns with someone's name engraved on them - I'll have to decide if I'm to name my kid "John Wayne" or "George S. Patton". I hope they don't pick on her in school.
