I own 2 10mm guns. I bought them after doing some research. A glock 20 and 29. I just got into pistols about a year ago. I just can't understand why the 10mm doesn't catch and replace the 45. I believe if it were to become more popular the ammo cost would come down and the availability go up. Any thoughts?

Probably because of the amount of guns chambered in .45. plus the .40sw takes a lot of market away from the 10mm, plus its cheaper than both the 10mm and the .45

What was the question on your poll?

If you throw in 38 super and 9x23 winchester I'm a fan of all of 'em. Have you started to reload your own rounds yet?

I guess it depends on what your doing. 45 is way easier to find also your hard pressed to see a gun last as long in 10mm than 45. 10mm is a stressful round. It brakes guns.

The .45ACP has been around for 100 years. It has been the standard US military pistol cartridge for a good portion of that time. That's a pretty good head start over the 10mm.

The 10mm is a good cartridge. I like it, but it has too much recoil for most people, it creates a larger pistol grip than the 9mm and .40, and it is expensive and hard to get a hold of.

The fact that the .45ACP has been around so long, is so much more available and common, and fairly similar in performance (maybe slightly less effective) leaves very little room for the 10mm to get in on the action.

How many agencies issue 10mm as their standard caliber? Can't imagine there are many...

in a perfect world { less cost, more models to choose from, etc. } the 10mm would run away with most of the .45 business, but - always a "but" - there isn't much chance under our present gun-world.....I'd trade all my .45 for 10's if it were a perfect world (gun-world)

I voted 10mm because it is easily convertible to 40 for cheap plinking, and the cartridge is far more diverse. Nothing against the 45... its a good man stopper, but the 10mm hits hard enough to hunt with, and penetrates deep enough to use as a woods defense gun. There are also many great personal defense loadings for it as well. Just all-around more uses in a 10mm.

The .45 was a military cartridge for decades... that is the reason.

Obviously the 10mm is far more versatile in the same size platforms. Handload, and a large portion of the 10mm's cost and availability shortcomings disappear.

10mm is more versatile...that's why I voted for it. I have 3 .45s and 2 10s.

I don't think he is asking which is more popular or more common... I think he is asking which is better.

But don't you think if more people went with the 10 that the ammo cost would come down and availability would go up?

I'm just saying that it APPEARS to be a much better all around cartridge than the 45 or 40.

Agree. You can get 2 guns for the price of 1 plus $100 for a barrel. To me, the 10 seems like a no-brainer.

Versatility is overrated

I go with the 45. Easier to shoot. The ballistics may not equal a 10mm, but so what? No one has ever claimed that a 45 is less than adequate for defense. And it's fun to shoot at the range.

Yeah, you "can" hunt with a 10 mm. There are better handguns for that purpose. Admittedly, most are in revolvers, but that's not a flaw in my book.

I voted for the 10mm, but I love both cartridges. I have 3 10mm's and 2 .45's.

10mm is clearly superior ballistically, and also more versatile as others have pointed out.

The downside is that its harder to find, and there arent many places to that make REAL 10mm ammo, and not that weak downloaded garbage. Size isnt an issue, since it isnt going to be any larger than a .45 of the same model.

As silly as it sounds, I would probably big a fan of the .40 S&W as well if it was called the 10mm Kurz instead.

I think that the dust has kind of settled, and now most 10mm fans understand the difference between .40, off-the-shelf 10mm, and 10mm full house. Those who shoot 10mm now know more WHY they like it.

I will keep my .45s, but I'm seriously considering a 10mm long-slide for a woods/hunting backup gun.

If I ever buy one of these it will be a .45 ACP. Such .45 ammo is so exceedingly common and easy to find since it's used in so many guns and has been for the last century. It doesn't matter how great a caliber is if almost nobody makes it. (And I personally don't know how great or not great 10 mm is. I only know it's not at all common.)

Which would you prefer?

It really depends on what the use is.

I love the 1911 and have relied on it for years for recreation and protection.
I am thoroughly content with the 45acp. I don’t particularly feel the 10mm is going to be any more effective than my .45acp against an intruder/assailant. I also don’t feel my 1911 is going to be any more accurate chambered in 10mm.
I happen to like the fat 230gr standard pressure JHP from the 1911. It is also my personal opinion that anyone who feels a .45acp JHP is unsuitable for defense of life and property is a fool. Again, that’s just my opinion.
I guess that means I would prefer a .45acp for around the house, perhaps carry as well.

However, for hiking/camping use, I intend to purchase a G20 SF. See, in the land of cougars and bears, I quite like the idea of extra punch and capacity. So I suppose for hiking and camping, the 10mm has my vote.

Overall, I guess I prefer the .45acp.
