I can't believe anyone would bash a weapon because it was communist block originated and used. Do some people not know the Soviets lost more civilians and soldiers than any other nation opposing the Nazi's. I'm an American but I certainly appreciate the Soviet sacrifice. MK is a superhero to me and there are two reasons I want an AK. For it's historical significance and because it is probably the best close quarters defense weapon of all time.

Should have died 89 years ago. Would have saved countless go guy lives.

Yes, I'm sure no one else in Russia would have ever invented an autoloading carbine. Ever. Makes perfect sense.

Happy Birthday to one of the greatest firearm innovators in history!

I'll fire off a few mags in honor of the old guy!

To whoever said it may be an airsoft gun, I don't know if that's what it is, but it certainly isn't a real AK. Look behind the bolt carrier under the reciever cover. It's filled in solid.

And happy birthday, Mr. Kalashnikov!

I don't think its right to blame the man for the use/misuse of his invention. He made that gun for his country as a patriot. I respect that.

Though he is on the side of Russia, who is still somewhat our enemy, I also respect the man for his mechanical genious. I also am thankful that there is a more affordable and powerful option to the ar-15. :)

Hats off to you, you sly old Rusky war relic.

Should have died 89 years ago. Would have saved countless go guy lives.
Paul Mauser should've never lived, saves alot of soldiers from getting shot from Germans
Arisaka should've never lived, saves alot of people from gettting shot by the Japanese
Hugo Schimisser should've never lived

hell, the Chinese chemists that invented gunpowder 2000 years ago should've never lived

why stop there?

The caveman that invented clubs and arrow should've never lived, i mean, we'd be so much better off.....

He created it to defend his country and it is not his fault that others misused it.
Yeah, I don't blame him for the Communist system, he just saw a need to defend his nation--- Everything I have read leads me that he is a good guy-- one you could have a beer (or vodka?) with and do some fishing....

Happy B Day !

WishingMK never born or died young is an ignorant statement by am even more ignorant person. He invented the most popular reliable weapon in modern warfare. The only sad thing is the USA did not adopt a version of it die strictly to political reasons. Please refrain from making such juvenile remarks in this forum. There are plenty of other boards that condone such stupidity.

One thing's for sure, he would be ridiculously rich if he wasn't Russian.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Kalashnikov. When history is written, and we're all toting plasma rifles in the 20 kW range, chances are great that we will remember the AK-47 as the de-facto firearm of the 20th century.

If i had a choice of an M16 or an AK 47....

i would definately choose the AK 47 over the M16 !
It is more rugged and reliable.

The AK he is holding is a GSG-47 a .22 AK

I dont think so. The GSG has the dimples to resemble a stamped AK receiver, but the one he is holding appears to be milled. Plus its a different magazine.

Anyways, Happy Bday to the man. Im a big fan of his work. :)

It's kind of sad to see all these people bashing the Soviet system, considering they probably have no idea how and why it came into existence. Should really read up on your history, guys.

By bashing the soviet system do you mean communism? Cuz I can intelligently bash that all day. I just won't because this is a gun forum not a political forum.

I wonder what Mikhail did for his 90th birthday. I'm sure it involved 7.62x39 and a round of stolichnaya. Not that I condone drinking and shooting. ;)

I'm not sure if everyone has read these or not but I thought these are interesting quotes from Kalashnikov:

"My work is my life, and my life is my work. I invented this assault rifle to defend my country. Today, I am proud that it has become for many synonymous with liberty."

"It is the Germans who are responsible for the fact that I became a fabricator of arms. If not for them, I would have constructed agricultural machines.

"If someone asks me how I can sleep at night knowing that my arms have killed millions of people, I respond that I have no problem sleeping, my conscience is clean. I constructed arms to defend my country."

"Before attempting to create something new, it is vital to have a good appreciation of everything that already exists in this field."
"I am still ready to shake hands with anyone who designs a better assault rifle than mine."

"It is painful for me to see when criminal elements of all kinds fire from my weapon, I created this weapon primarily to safeguard our fatherland"

just wish the guy would have defected to the U.S. with the AK design when it's all said and done, silly I know but...

In the US they would have rejected its design...too simple, rugged and reliable...we tend to overcomplicate things...

keep in mind that Mr. K's design was one of a handful of designs destined to be Russia's new rifle. You had a re-vamped version of the SVT and a few other guns that all embodied what actually became the AK-47/AKM rifle. Even though it is Kalashnikov's gun, a lot of what ended up in the final product came from several other competing weapons.

So even if he had died 89 years ago, something that looks and works like an AK would have still came along, it's just it would have been called the A(initial of majority inventor; probably Simonov)-forty-something instead.
