Your sample size of 1 is not a good indicator of anything. Heck I am sure there are even some happy Hesse owners out threre. That doesn't mean they make good firearms.

Ask magpul or PR what they see in their classes.

I have only one Doublestar and PERSONALLY don't know anyone else who has one, but the on-line reviews were favorable and the price was right last fall (three weeks after O-day) so I jumped on it.

Today's price at Buds is within a couple bucks of what I paid.

It's been a good rifle and has operated well with both steel and brass. I figure if steel cases are as bad as they say, my gun's price point is low enough I can afford to rebuild if necessary. My next step is a budget-line scope for plinking.

ok i'm sure there are tons of pictures of broken oylmpic parts....any articles written by an credible author saying oylmpics are sub par? or are we just going on what a bunch of colt owners said to make them self feel like there better than everybody else....lol? i own a few AR's 1 olympic 2 del-tons and 1 COLT I've never had any problems with any of these rifles except the colt and it was due to a bad magazine so i can't blame the rifle.the point i'm trying to make is...u guys out there looking to buy your first AR go on facts not rumors....how many ford owners outhere that will admit chevy makes a better truck? or vise versa.....AR's are the same way what ever brand someone has that person insists that brand is the best ever made. now don't get me wrong i like my colt just fine it shoots great but after 6 years i still can't find a reason to say its better than any of my outher AR'S just my take i think my opion is not bias because i own and love both rifles....with that said all you colt owners looking down your noses at outher AR owners GET OVER YOURSELF.....the next AR I buy will be a noveske when i get it home and shoot is and if i can find a reason to say its better than my outher AR's i'll post that aSAP
(i hope its better because $1800 is allot of money lol)

Del-Ton is the best for the money in terms of a budget. You can have a pretty decent rifle for about $600 by grabbing a rifle kit from them, buying a stripped lower on the cheap, and assembling it yourself. I had a Del-Ton and it worked just fine (after I started using better mags, lol), but I sold it to fund a gun safe and a glock during the panic. The only thing I'd say is to not order it with their BCG, and use the saved money and put it towards a mil-spec BCG to drop into it.

But, if you are able to spend a little more, you can probably walk off with a mil-spec bare-bones AR for around $850-900 if you shop right. Grab a BCM upper and bolt group for about $550-600, build a decent lower for about $200-240, add on some basic handguards for like $20, grab a rear sight or handle for $50-100, and voila.

Check out ar5.com. There are a couple of threads talking about all the problems people have had with the company and their product. Pictures included. They are sub par it has nothing to do with someone wanting to feel superior. It has to do with facts.

Can't you have an AK, just not a 7.62x39 one? I feel for the convoluted gun laws up there---

a dependable low priced ar15

:cuss::cuss:when i decided to purchase a ar15 ,i started looking at gun shows . then i went to several gun shops here in louisville,ky. i ended up with a brand new ar15 5.56 nato with 16 " barrel and vietnam style era rear site. the salesman at knob creek told me ,i can sell you any brand of ar15 here you want with all the bells and whistles!!! but if you want to experience the ar for its design and basic function shooting, buy the olympic for $665. and enjoy it. i have owned it since 2007, i have shot at least 3to 4 hundred rounds of brands winchester ,federal, wolf, with out one jam up!!! this ar is just fine to me period.!!!!!!!!!! from want info i have found on olys in the past was there were some problems with some mechanics of there ars back in the early 70s but this was resolved many years ago.

I'm a defender of Oly. Have had them in the past and shoot the snoot out of them without any issues. Have two friends that own them and shoot them alot as well. I know I know! There is better, but for the price I think there a good gun. Again, I don't buy into brand names. I just like to shoot guns that work, whatever brand.

Oly Detractor here.

Personal experience. Here's mine. I bought a new oly .45 upper using 30 rd sten mags (I believe they where sten mags. It was a long time ago). Needless to say the mags didn't work very well. I could fit maybe 11 rounds in the mag by hand. After that I had to use anything sitting around to stab more into the mag. I couldn't get more then 15 in the mags no matter what. The few rounds that did fit into the mag would fire and function. Bummer, It could have been a fun toy. I understand this is an issue with the mags so I call oly only to be told that I was out of luck because those are the mags that come with it. I told them I wanted to send it back and they took it. What really makes me mad was the customer service. They wouldn't return it without charging a restocking fee. I told them I fired less then a hundred rounds and the rep told me "oh no, it's been fired much more then that". I took the fee to get out of having anything else to do with them. I will never purchase anything from them again and tell everyone that will listen not to purchase from either.

I have owned a couple of cheapish AR-15s. One was an Oly Plinker, and it was not a bad gun, save the roll pin in the gas block working it's way out once. Easy fix. Even with that problem, I'm with the Oly guys here. It did it's job as long as I did mine.

The other was a DPMS lower that I built up. It was also not a bad rifle. Unfortunately I had to get rid of both for different (read: money) reasons.

My next one will be a Colt 6940. Not knocking the others, but I like the rifle and I make a little more money now. That said, I wouldn't mind socking away a Sportical or CMMG Bargain Bin rifle or twelve after I get the Colt. You know, just to have.

AR's are thought of as an expensive weapon but right now they are equivalent or cheaper than a Rem 700. Don't believe me go look.

There were Bargain Bin Guns AR-15's (made from every AR part there is), at the last RKShow in Kansas City MO for $599-$699. Unless your looking for top of the line parts, that's probably the cheapest way to get into an AR.

Building one is kind of tricky cost wise. You could put together a lower from Show Me Shooters for around $200, and sometimes you'll find a basic upper for $500, which means you can save on the taxes. But just barely.

Building is almost always cheaper. One of the reasons being you don't have to pay for the FET!.

Oh and Someone mentioned a Colt that split in two. That was a Umarex .22. yes it has the Colt name on it but it is no more a colt then my Saturn is an Acura.

Have you looked at Kel Tec SU16s? I know you said you want an AR but these do the same job for less money. They take AR mags, have a piston driven system instead of the direct impingement of most ARs, are very lightweight due to the polymer construction, and are reported to be very reliable. There are 4 models and all go for less than $600 at most places. My local gun store had SU16Cs in stock for $475 back in the summer, and I imagine the price has only gone down if anything.

Just something to look into.
