SB 776: Registering semi-auto magazines

Just got this in the email from the NRA

"Senate Bill 776, sponsored by State Senator Loni Hancock (D-9), has been introduced in Sacramento. The bill has been assigned to the Senate Public Safety Committee and could be heard on Tuesday, April 21 or Tuesday, April 28.

Simply put, SB776 would mandate the registration of all magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition. The possession of unregistered magazines would be a crime and punishable up to a year in prison. "


This bill seems to be aimed at forcing standard capacity magazine owners to register them. Standard capacity magazines are already banned in CA, except for those of us lucky enough to get them before IIRC 1994.

What can Californians do to voice our opposition to this proposal? Other than the usual writing our reps, etc.?

 
My guess is that
1) only magazines that have serial # can be registered.
2) most mags don't have serial # = "not our problem"
3) can't buy new serialized mags because of 1994 ban

1+2+3 = most standard cap mags are now defacto illegal/unreigsterable.

Which I think is the intention of the bill in he first place.
 
I suggest everyone in Cali stamp or engrave some numbers on their mags, just in case.
 
I really hope this doesn't go very far. I'll tell you, just went to Disneyland, and had fun. But driving back into AZ, the air changes, ......smelling like freedom. :)
 
I think the point of the bill is to turn 10s of thousands of Californians into felons.

That and confiscating any standard capacity magazine from those too afraid to take the risk of being a felon (which would be most gun owners -- since it isn't worth taking the chance and then losing all remaining gun rights).
 
It's too bad the bill reads, "possessing" cause if it read, Owning, then I would help all you out and say that I just lent you them. :)

Even if it passes, there will be loopholes, Just find them.

Legislators allway's leave loopholes. They just do.
 
I think Happiness is a warm gun has it right with the addition that everything they said when stacked up against the reality of it means - "confiscation".

The scenario as I see it playing out....

Joe Citizen calls or emails the authority cited as in charge of the matter after it passes about his magazines that he's owned since before the laws limiting capacity were introduced & is told, only new manufacture magazines with serial numbers need to be registered sir.

Fast forward a couple months & Joe Citizen is approached by said authority for whatever reason & is told that there is no such part of the law that "grandfathers" older high cap mags because there is no way to determine how old a magazine is without said serial number & that We're sorry but we're going to have to confiscate those but you can take it up with the judge when your case comes to court, here's your citation.

What you do is stash all your mags,ammo, firearms etc and don't tell ANYBODY where they are. Then either move out of calif or prepare for a fight. FRJ

That would appear to be the goal of the California state legislature would it not? :fire:

Glad that I don't live there and much sympathy for those whom do.
