Homemade File knife

thanks, it was stock removal, i shape it on a bench grinder, and finished it by hand.

Cosmose--I have to ask: Starting with a file (very much hardened steel) did you grind right away, or de-temper, grind, and then re-heat-treat?

And if you ground on the as-is file steel, what did you use to grind steel that hard??

Anyhow, nice design; nice basic knife!
 
i annealed it, shaped and beveled, then reharden and tempered it
my brother has been making knives for several years and i just started we're pretty low tech, so we use a simple fire for hardening and annealing, and motor oil for quenching, and a toaster oven for tempering
 
Good for you! Sounds like you follow the right steps.

Be very careful with knives that have no choil or guard and the edge is directly in line with the grip. Slipping onto the edge is a very real hazard that should be mitigated.
 
yea i would have liked to drop the handle more, but the file was only a inch wide, i did put file work then started the edge about 1/8 from the file work for add protection.
