I have a regular tapco 30 rd. 7.62 mag that I bought to try and make it work with my saiga 7.62, and it just doesn't quite seat itself. It seems like the little nub on the back is a little too thick to latch onto the gun. What do people usually do to fix this problem?

Saiga's don't have a bolt-hold open mag, VZ-58's do, but they are not AK-47's. Saiga's do have bolt-hold button on the bottom of the receiver but the mag has nothing to do with it.
May I suggest this forum

dinzagarms is saying that mag is for a Saiga, so you probably got a bad mag.

My understanding is that, you can make AK-47 mags fit but without a bullet guide installed in the gun it will not feed.

The mag latch on the saiga wont allow for a standard AK mag to be inserted. This is very easy to remedy. Simply remove material (dremel or a file) from the mag latch until the mag will insert.

Some people grind the tab on the mags but that is not the best appraoch IMO since each mag takes as much effort as just doing the gun once and then the gun will run all AK mags.

There are two more issues to be aware of. First if that saiga is stock then putting that mag in it is a violation of 922r and you are breaking a federal firearm law. If you have not swapped out the requisite number of parts to get you to ten or fewer foreign countable parts you cannot legally put that mag in there.

Issue two: that mag may not feed reliably in a stock saiga particularly the last round. You need a bullet guide. I suggest dinzag as the place to buy one. Drill and tap the whole and install it and you are good to go.

The mag pictured is a SUREFIRE mag, not a Tapco. You might need to take a little material off the bottom edge of the lug to get it to fit right. Several of mine needed to be fitted. Even had to fit a couple of the factory ten-rounders.

blarelli> I never used that in my saiga but, make sure your saiga is converted before you stick a 30round mag it will violiot 992r(bad spelling) also get a THERMOLD mag I have some that fits in my saiga for now untill I get a bullet guide fixed. The thermold mags are $16 new from CTD or gunbroker $19 new. You will have to file the mag lip thing, because it is to think to fit in your saiga.

Did you do a conversion to your saiga? you can not just stick mags into it, only surefire mags if you havnt did a conversion. If you stick a mag in a UNCONVERTED saiga you violat 922r. I HAVE BAD SPELLING

Do not stick a 30round thermold mag into your saiga unless you converted it, 992r 5 usmade parts, tapco trigger group, usmade stock and us made pistol grip, or gas piston/handguards.......!!!!!!!!!!!;)

To paraphrase:

Do not stick any magazine over 10 rounds in to your factory Saiga. Doing so makes you a federal felon.

To legally use 11 round or more capacity magazines in a factory Saiga, you have to knock the "factory" right out of it (make it 922r compliant).

Saiga's take a slightly different magazine than regular Ak mags, to get around 922 since stock Saiga mags are all low cap.

The front of the magwell in a Saiga is different than a regular Ak. However if the latch on the back of an Ak mag is filed down, and a notch on the front of the mag is filed out it will fit in the magwell, although it may not seat or feed properly.

IMHO- surefire makes an excellent highcap saiga specialty mag that properly fits, quickly, and has a last round hold open, although the bolt slams shut when the mag is removed. I have not had to modify the surefire mags at all. I keep these loaded for HD and use them as my second mag when training so I can do a quick reload if necessary.

Mastermolder/Thermold mags are second best. They feed just as reliably as Surefires but need some modification. I got mine second hand, so I don't know exactly how they were modified but it looks like the back notch was filed down. Originally, I thought thermold made these specifically for saigas, and the back was filed down to tweak it a bit as is often necessary for Ak's. However the Thermold engineer at the Shot show said they have never made saiga mags.

Promags, even the saiga specific ones are the worst of the ones I have tried. The front notch is just not right and it can take a few concentrated attempts to get the mag in there. Also there is something wrong with the follower. The last round can jam. - I would stay away from these.

My Siaga has been converted to 922 compliance, however, I've never installed a bullet guide. I have enough mags that work reliably (thousands of rounds with no problems) that it is not a priority for me.

There isn't any "getting around 922r".

If you insert a magazine of more than 10 round capacity in to a factory Saiga, you are violating 922r. It doesn't matter one bit if the mag is designed to fit a factory Saiga or not.

I don't advocate breaking the law but **** 922r! I wish that stupid law would just ******* go away! No wonder so many people go insane dealing with bull**** like this. I also really like game laws and speed limits if you can't tell. Where I live I have to get a permit to own a freaking dog for cryin out loud. Welcome to the land of the free.
