Is it possible that I was just watching this program with the "gunnie" Lee Ermey ? and he was using a couple spent brass as ear plugs? I could'nt get a good look. God I hope so!

ive been told by many old school (joined pre 90's) that they used spent brass idk why he would do it now much it is definitly better than nothing

Personally, I think he is smart enough to have custom ear plugs under those cases.

Saw it last night and can only assume that they were over foamies for visual effect.

Regardless of whether he was being stupid, and the producer and staff were being equally stupid, or it was just costuming over real hearing protection I fired off a blistering email to the program and the network complaining about the irresponsible nature of depicting this to the thousands of viewers.

I want to be absolutely clear on this, wear real purpose built hearing pro.

As mentioned in previous post he has no inside voice. Maybe they are brass but its his ears and his business. If he gets your email you better be ready to hit the deck and give him 50 pushups.

I like his shows. My wife always asks why I like getting yelled at.:D

There are some guys who act tough as nails. From what I can tell, Marine Drill instructors are, retired or not.

Good grief....its still America isn't it....Freedom...? Wear what you want as earplugs.
I don't think it was stupid at all, maybe he lost his plugs an knew enough to use spent cases. Maybe it was real earplugs inside cases...maybe he did it to see if someone would
write a blistering email......

Old Marine custom. Department of Defense absolutely hates to spend any money on the USMC. Ask any Marine about the worn out equipment they get issued from the last war. Our Govt. doesn't seem to embrace the whole "support our troops" thing. The folks who appropiate funding for the military should spend a couple of months in the field and they'll start to get it. They would rather spend billions of dollars on high tech aircraft. I imagine if you were a grunt you would rather have thousands of A 10 Warthogs than a hundred F22 Raptors.

I assume the brass is actually SPENT, lest someone come alongside and tap the earplug real hard with a prick punch...

FWIW, I never used to wear hearing protection back in '88 when I was into shooting; today, however, BOTH ear plugs and muffs are worn by me. I even wear muffs whilst reloading.

Amen to the A10s. As they say, quantity has a quality all its own.

Did you see the episode where he hit himself in the forehead when shooting a .44 magnum revolver? Just cause he makes a good TV spokesperson don't make him an expert.

I saw that last night, too. I was wondering how effective it really is, but it reminded me of my dad and I plinking when I was a kid. He always used spent shells for hearing protection when he was firing his 44 magnum. In his late 70's his hearing is still sharp.

I can't count the number of times I have used spent casings as ear plugs. No they are not as comfortable as foam earplugs but they do get the job done.

and he was using a couple spent brass as ear plugs?
Old school for sure, but it's far better then nothing. And loaded pistol ammo works way better cause it's tapered on the end and fits in your ear with less pain then empty brass.

I went through Army Basic training in 1964, and if the range NCO's even thought you were trying to use cigarette butts or spent cases for ear plugs, you were in deep dodo.

Later, we used loaded rounds, or butt's, or brass for ear plugs in AIT to keep the 4-duce mortars and 106mm recoilless rifles from making our ears bleed. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn't, and you got bleeding ears anyway.
The range NCO's there overlooked it, and were doing the same thing we were.

Saw my first real Army issue rubber ear plugs in 1968.
But by then it was of course, too late.

Drail, as a former Marine Infantryman I can attest to that! I remember old ALICE packs that I had to sew up in places and other items that were fixed with duct tape. However, I will say this, they NEVER skimped on weaponry! We had brand new M16A2's when the rest of the services were still usings M16A1's. We had brand new M60E3's and SAW's before the Army even knew what they were. And the amount of ammunition I expended during my enlistment was astronomical!

Worn out equipment and well worn out boots, but when it came to guns we had everything we needed... and then some!
