Which states is an AR15 legal?

Missouri is an excellent state to own firearms in. Our CCW is recognized by more states than any other.

The only thing you cannot do statewide is open carry as far as I know.

Virginia is a shall issue state with no firearm waiting period. You fill out the same amount of paper work for a handgun as a long gun. No back ground checks for private sales at the gun show or any private sails for that matter, which really makes the gun grabbers angry:). No limitations on Mag cap. We have beaches, mountains, plains and swamps. Not to mention very few natural harms to humans. We only have black bears, very few alligators, very few rattle snakes, water moccasins, copperheads, black widows, brown recluses and sharks. All and all not a bad place to live:).

I think you can own an AR variant in all 50 states..but you may be limited on "evil" features..

Just avoid these states like the plague:

-Calif
-Illinois
-NY
-NJ
-Mass
-Maryland
-(maybe) Conn

And you'll be fine. You can even have SOME flavor of castrated ARs in most if not all those states, too.

Delaware is fine for anything not full auto or burst SBRs have to be tax stamped and assembled (made) yourself as no one sells them complete here no limit on mag capacity
and no silencers here (which i dont understand since my neighbors would enjoy some peace lol)

from what ive gathered alot of places allow AR15s the list of places that doesnt would be shorter

if your looking for a good place to live as far as gun laws goes Arizona is very nice along with Montana New Mexico Vermont Texas Nevada and Alaska

avoid commie states and you're fine.

no restrictions at all in florida, and you can even get a full auto / silenced weapon if you have the $$$.

Just buy the AR now (OLL with Bullet Button or similar magazine lock), and you can have most of the evil features anyone else can have (collapsible stock, pistol grip, forward pistol grip, flash hider). It just takes about a second longer to drop the magazine with a mag lock.

Also, don't use high cap (over 10 round) magazines in anything with a bullet button.

If you do move out of CA, just replace the mag lock with the original one from the parts kit, the rifle then functions as normally as your new neighbor's.

Source of these claims- we're an AR-15 shop in San Diego. Evil guns are easier to buy and own here than most think. :D

Hi. I'm here to say that AR's are fully legal in Maryland. Mags containing 30 or more rounds are perfectly legal as well, so long as you purchase them out of state and don't sell or give them away while in state.

Want to SBR it? Go right ahead. Looking to suppress it? Fine by us. Find a good deal on a DIAS? Bring it on.

In short, MD is not the big, bad commie nanny-state everyone here would like you to think it is.

Legal in Illinois, EXCEPT Cook County (Chicago) where it is a felony to posess an AR-15; and 30 round magazines.
Yep, the only people who "carry" in Cook county are: LEOs, gang bangers, pimps, and drug dealers. :banghead:

As a former resident (whose AR15 resided in Alabama for a number of years), let me help you out a bit.

Legal in Illinois, EXCEPT Crook County...
There, fixed it for you. :)

Former Crook County resident, and now a proud citizen of a Free State (Texas).

The number of states in which AR-15's are not readily available, or are hobbled, you can count on the fingers of one hand. California and two or three Eastern Seaboard states are about it. California's restrictions on rifle stock and handgrip shape, receiver style, etc. are the most draconian of any state in the nation; even Massachusetts doesn't even come close.

The following states have some sort of Assault Weapons Ban that affects how you can construct an AR-15. In the other states you should be good to go.

CA, CT, DC, MA, NJ, NY, and Cook county (Chicago) IL.

Contrary to popular opinion, you can have an AR-15 in California. There are three ways.
1) If you owned it before a certain long-ago date and registered it, you can configure it however you like. Catch is there are no new registrations being taken so if you don't already have it, you can't have it now.
2) You can have a rifle that *looks* exactly like a free state rifle. This is called a fixed-magazine rifle. You can have any of the evil features, but you're limited to 10 rounds (and many use a 30-round mag internally blocked to 10 rounds), and the magazine release has to have a lock on it so that your finger can't depress the mag release. Instead you use a pointy tool like the tip of a bullet.
3) You can have a rifle that *functions* just like a free state rifle (30 round mags OK, detachable by a finger press -OK). The only catch is that you have to remove all evil features including the pistol grip. This results in a weapon that has a different appearance from what you're used to, for example this rifle with the Exile Machine Hammerhead rifle stock adapter:

Also contrary to popular belief, it's not illegal to own and use 30 round magazines in CA, no matter how you acquired them.

i have a question about the ar 15

i the weapon say its chambered for 223 AND 5x56 am i likely to have problems with lake city ammo as in getting stuck in the chamber cause its not long enough??

Iowa, no cans, SBR, or rock and roll, just found out that you can't travel with loaded magazines here either. Evil features from the ban era not a problem. Very limited big game hunting with rifle. Something I heard, if you qualify to thin the deer herd plaguing metro areas you can use a rifle with silencer, might even be required, prolly way more legal stuff than most want to deal with. For the rest of us here, if it requires a fed tax stamp it's illegal.

You'll be good in most places. Just look at lowracer's list. In some states, there is no state law preemption, so counties, cities or other municipalities can enact stricter laws. Here in CO, we have such a preemption law, though Denver managed to circumvent it in a couple ways.
Otherwise, the state is very gun friendly.

There you guys go painting all of New England Massachusettes red (or is it yellow?) again.

Hi cap ARs (as well as FA ARs with the appropriate Fed. tax stamp) are perfectly legal in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Me and NH are both "shall issue" and "castle doctrine" states

I love my home here, but if I had to move to New England, it'd definitely be Maine.

In NJ you can't have a flash surpressor, bayonet stud, or magazine over 15 rds.

This thread makes me very glad I live in Texas. Leave the California mindset behind and I'll take you to the range myself and give you 100rds in my AR if you move to Houston. G/L on the job-search!

In CT you can own an AR-15, and there is no capacity limit.

The only restriction with AR's is that it cannot be a Colt manufactured receiver.
I'm dead serious. The rule is that stupid. I can own a 16" M4gery with 30 round mags, etc... so long as the receiver doesn't say 'Colt' on it.
That is incredibly stupid. Isn't Colt's factory in Connecticut?
